notes
The Hungry Ghost (writer, musician, and digital artist Blake Chen) conceived his latest album in the midst of 5 years spent performing in the Detroit area, both as a solo act as well as a member of the band N2 Submission.
Sharing the stage with more experienced musicians in the city's many smoke-filled bars, Chen gradually developed his unique sound, a hybrid of the goth/industrial/trip hop influence prevalent in the scene and his own love of folk/country/blues music that he heard growing up.
Drawing from his experiences in this underground scene, Chen's songs offer glimpses into a world filled with exotic characters and enchanting mysteries... a tantalizing blend of truth and fantasy.
"This music is great and addicting. I love it like a drug!"
- Juvi, Okeechobee, FL
"The Hungry Ghost's self-titled debut LP is sparse and magical. Lyrics tell stories, beats imagine worlds without boundaries, and the words float above it all."
- Kyshah Hell, MorbidOutlook.com
"The lyrics are enchanting and mysterious and dark and just really cleverly crafted. The voices on the actual line "evil never dies" is just awesome, sends shivers down my spine and that's how I always can tell a great song."
- Liana, UK

Hungry Ghost will take away your hunger
author: amy kThis CD is amazing. A few years have passed and I still pull out this disc once a month and go to that other place. The way that the Hungry Ghost captures emotion on this CD is timeless. Beautifully dark and equally enchanting. Fantasy lyrics and soothing vocals. For those who love trip hop as well as goth, it is a perfect blend.

This is a very special CD. The unusual lyrics makes you think and amuse you at the same time. Also the haunting voice of The Hungry Ghost are very special. Unfortunately this CD is hard to get in europe......
Alluring and hypnotizing
author: MintykissThis CD all I can say is one of a kind...you can sit and be in a different world and taken away for a while with his enchanting, hypnotizing and exotically different voice and sounds and beats. It's not a type you've probably evver heard before, and nowadays it's hard to find something different and unique. I know I'm glad I bought it and will definitely make an investment on this CD. What can you say, someone who can find a unique voice out there, and then be BEAUTIFUL and EXCELLENT at it...a talent any eye could catch....give this beautiful icy haunting voice and sounds a chance...;) ;)
Dark and enchanting
author: KT/ KoRnI accidently downloaded heaven is a dark place a long time back and I loved the song. I finally got around to searching for that artist and found them. I bought the CD and I love it...its trippy. Its not my usual metal or hard rock but I love to chill to it! Keep it goin!
interesting but dark
author: bethi would be interested to see how his music develops...good beginning- may get airplay on an independent station, but not on a top 40....too individual for top 40
I love Heaven is a dark place!
author: MarkIf the song Heaven is a dark place could get some air time it could become a hit, good luck with that though.
if only he'd make it big ...
author: morphalWe'll see how well he does on his future albums, but this is a fantastic start. This is one of the best albums I've ever found for putting on when hanging out with friends. It's good music that you can listen to and appreciate the groove of, but it doesn't pull you away from your surroundings. Mellow, a little catchy, enjoyable music with emphasis on what sounds good and not what's most marketable.
Soothing, moody music
author: Caleb PittmanThere's not much to say about this cd that other reviews haven't already said. Basically, everything you see on this page is true; this cd if full of atmospheric, haunting music. Don't be misled, though, I wouldn't put this under a darkwave/gothic with groups like Switchblade Symphony or the Cruxshadows. Though they are haunting in their own right, The Hungry Ghost is something different. The cd has tastes of gothic in it, but it's in a more soothing, mellow vein. Think 70s folk music (something like nick drake) with some trip hop background, darkly imaginative lyrics, and with Tina Root and Susan Wallace providing the finishing touches.
Normally not my type of music, but...
author: Arllyn HernandezThis isn't the type of music i normally listen, but this cd blew me out of the water. It is one of those cd's you can listen to from start to finish without skipping any songs, and the fusion of disparate music styles gives The Hungry Ghost a sound that is uniqely its own. Don't be scared by the "goth" label... any fans of Portishead, Massive Attack or Tricky will love this!
Cool and unusual!
author: Renee PalmerI love it. The melodies, lyrics, instruments came together in a cool, unusual way. I'm really horrible at labeling things and this album is so different that it transcends all categories. But I would probably put it in the "gothic" category. It reminds me of early Bauhaus, some Front 242 and I do agree with the one reviewer who said he (or was it a she?) was reminded of Bryan Ferry. What I liked most about the album is it's uniqueness. The songs are arranged well and I especially liked the unusual sounding instruments, for instance the songs first kill and scary town's Chinese influenced drumbeats.
Not just grooves, but real songs with thought provoking lyrics!
author: MiloLike nightfall, The Hungry Ghost arrives gently. A slight chill brushes your skin. You cannot decide whether the sensation evokes serenity, foreboding or both. He is a seductive vampire, drawing you toward the dark. And he can write a damn good tune, too. Trip hoppy arrangements on this self titled CD can't hide the truth. The Ghost is a songwriter at heart. These are not just grooves but real songs with thought provoking lyrics. Imagine Lou Reed produced by Tricky. Like Lou at his most musical, The Ghost has a voice that can suggest a melody without actually singing it. Sometimes he croons, too, casually, introspectively, almost lazily. A friend said he sounds like Bryan Ferry talking to himself. The music is an icy mix of synths, samples and programmed beats. The overall effect is a sort of goth folk pop. This is how Leonard Cohen's 1988 album I'm Your Man must have sounded before rapid aging, brought on by cheesy keyboards, nearly killed the spooky synth pop classic. My only complaint with The Hungry Ghost is that he may be too consistant. The stylistic sameness sustains the work but makes it harder for individual songs to shine. So listen closely. It's worth the effort. Lyrically, he's a nihilist with romantic leanings. That doesn't make him a Nick Cave knockoff. Like the Bad Seed himself, The Hungry Ghost sounds genuinely conflicted. He's "blind to the light, lost in the dark." In his vision of heaven "the angels ... dress in black. Once you enter, there's no going back." Beware. The Hungry Ghost is a crafty pop writer and skilled producer. His ability to make the bleak sound appealing will haunt you long after the music stops.
