notes

Well what can I say, I too have many stories within the decades of my life on the back burner to be eventually forgotten as some have been. And just a few up front that may be pertinent enough to pay attention to along with your cup of coffee. The trivial JEW'S HARP is known within the archives of strange or odd little instruments not worthy of being taken seriously within the vast kingdom of music. Guitar, keyboard, drums, not quite. It is most remembered as the silly little device that can create the BOIINNNGGGG sound effect when Bugs Bunny steps on a rake and smacks himself in the face with the handle. Or when the Road Runner stops abruptly in the middle of the road for a morsel of food the coyote has set as a trap.

It has been found in a few genres. Blues, country-western, folk and others. Well, over the decades with nothing else better to do I would twang walk everywhere I went. My first decade I always had one in my pocket a Snoopy or an American folk Harp. Today it’s a cole black and I stopped carrying them around about 20 years ago. I always wondered what it would sound like if it was played through guitar effects. I never knew for at least another decade. Then I would occasionally bump into a mic and some kind of effect usually a reverb or a simple delay, phase or flange. This scenario was usually some person I’ve met who was in a band and would show me his guitar and stuff.

A pattern emerged to were I would once again make a fool of myself with my JEW’S HARP thinking it was some kind of guitar. Fortunately these people were not all that cruel. They would humor me and I would think maybe I might have something here after all. (oddly enough over the years I was actually getting better playing this stupid thing). But oh how I wished I played the guitar. I did try guitar and harmonica be few times, and to my horror discovered I was poisoned by the harp. I was better at it than I would ever become at anything else. How bitterly sad. I did try to give up the harp on countless occasions. Dozens to a hundred times at least.

I became a Christian in 1974 a couple years after I was introduced to the harp. And all those years I managed to think the good Lord might have actually given me this thing for a reason. For five years now (02 - 07) I have gathered a variety of mixers guitar effects processors microphones etc.. But I could not sit down and play without discovery new sounds. This should be impossible. But I kept imagining what would it sound like if!!!!! And, that’s right! Bigger mixers and lots of patch cord spaghetti. Oh yeah! only one problem now. A bazillion sounds have come and gone, but nothing has been recorded. IT'S LAPTOP AND RECORDING PROGRAM TIME.
