How did it all happen? Forehead scratching guitar-poet seeks rhythm section from hell. You could say it started four years ago when the Oblivious Driver called Wade Ryff, the bass player from his high-school band. Yo Wade man, you wanna start a new project? The two begin exploring a universe of ideas, blending eclectic styles of rock into a single expression of rhythm and soul. The seed that was planted would soon begin to blossom into the wicked chemistry that would come to be known as The Atma, but there was still the question of a drummer.

After auditioning a staggering number of mediocre Craigs List drummers, the duo decided to join forces with percussionist Alowie Ahmad in the summer of 2002. They got to work in a sweaty garage studio in the heart of the San Fernando Valley. A sound began forming there in the haze of smoke and inspiration. What could you call this music? It was punk rock with a swing. Then again, it was funky psychedelic reggae with progressive overtones. At other times, soulfully intimate ambient viberation. But there was always that indescribable thread that brought it together as a whole, that made it all sound so uniquely Atma.

Creative differences found the band without a drummer in the summer of 2004. After another tedious string of auditions, the band discovered wild man drummer Lucas Ventura. The established a healthy chemistry and the inspiration soon followed. Within a few short months, the band tracked their first E.P. entitled Even The Sun. The six song compilation was warmly recieved and earned the band an underground following.

Several apartments, lockouts, and girlfriends later, the band took a moment to reflect on their progress. New songs had entered the mix, old ones had matured to perfection and it seemed that something more was needed to appease the bands growing fan base. Producer Niko Bolas and Engineer Erich Gobel were contacted and arrangements were made for the band to record their first full length album at Stagg St. studios.

What began as an innocent plan to track a record in a few days turned into bedlam of overdubs, tracking vocals in bathrooms, chasing funds, and renting gear. The budget for the record nearly doubled before it reached completion. Even so, the record is dripping with the energy and determination it took to nail it all together and marks a milestone in the band's list of accomplishments.
