notes

The Flat Mountain Girls are a high-energy old-time string band based in Portland, Oregon. The Flats are known for tight, raw three-part harmonies, powerful fiddling, and performances that explode with irrepressible glee and bawdy humor. Their repertoire includes arrangements of Carter Family classics, traditional songs from the Southern mountains, cowboy yodels, romping fiddle tunes, and the occasional original, combining tremendous enthusiasm with great respect for the old-time tradition. With Lisa Marsicek playing fiddle, Rachel Gold on banjo, Nann Alleman on guitar and Arthur Parker on bass, the Flat Mountain Girls bring foot-stomping fun to every performance.

Mississippi boy blown all the way up to Boston by a hurricane, here. When I get homesick, I put in this CD, sit back, and remember family get-togethers out in the country with all my aunts, uncles, and cousins sangin' and playin' the night away. Love it!

Wow. I've heard this band live numerous times and their synchronized energy just hits you like sunshine.. I forgot to get a 2nd beer at White Eagle tavern until they stopped playing; I was simply hypnotized. I listened to this CD (Honey... off) with a friend while driving and we missed our exit. It gives me goosebumps. I think they're Sirens...

  • Sorry, still got my whiskers.

First saw the ladies on You Tube and fell in love with them and their music straight away. Every track on this CD is fantastic and I defy anybody to keep your feet still whilst listening to it. Keep up the good work girls, and lets have many more albums from you.

  • Whiskers gone as requested Ma'am!

I came across this CD via a recomendation while out surfing (can't remember where). A fine selection of the secular and spiritual numbers. I particularly recommend Ragtime Cowboy Joe (my boys favourite), Black Eyed Susie and Oakie Noodler (my faves). Get your wallet out, get $15/£8/ Euro 12 , buy it, wait and relax to it, or get up and dance your heart out.

  • Loved you in California! Waiting for the new CD!!!

Rock on Ladies, that was one of the best shows I have seen. You are funny and play the heck out of that old time music! Can't wait for the new CD...counting the days!

  • Great Fun!

I really like their sound - they do some wickedly clever turns with their harmonizing and instrumentation. You can tell they've put a lot into this production.

  • This CD brings back great memories of River City Bluegrass 2007
    author: Donna Lindsay

I had never heard of this group until I saw them in concert last month and it is awesome that this CD captures not only their excellent musical ability, but the joy and energy that one normally only sees in a performance.

  • This CD rocks!

I love this CD! (Whoever Peggy is ((previous review here on CD Baby)) she has a stick up her bum, no soul & should stick to listening to whatever pablum the Pop Music field is cranking out.) The vocals on this are stunning and fun! Rock on Girls!

  • I like it
    author: Peggy

I wish the one girl didn't sound like a chipmunk, other than that I enjoyed the CD.

  • Great CD!
    author: Gloria W.

This is a terrific CD, vocals are great, what a talented group of young ladies. The instrumental work is excellent, couldn't find anything bad about this CD, it includes quite a few of my favorite old time songs played on my favorite instruments.

  • Nothin Flat 'bout this!
    author: Doug

This is just a fantastic lil Cd! The girls sing with such passion, and play with effortless quality! well they make it sound effortless, they all have amazing voices but Nann is really something special. There's a bit of everything here, Bluegrass, Mountain, Reels, Cowboy, how could you not love this group? Finally gotta mention Arthur, really strong Bass playing that adds a backbone to the group. Very very special Cd!

Good examples of an almost lost music form. Really fun to listen to in a bar, with a beer on the porch or even with the kids (beer for grownups only.)

  • Move over Uncle Earl.
    author: Jeffrey Adair

I haven't enjoyed an old time album so much since The Red Clay Ramblers were at the height of their powers in the 70's. The main draw here is the kick ass singing, but the playing is raw and fine, too. Extra high marks for the banjo work.

  • What fun - I love this CD!
    author: Dave Monnie

This CD does a great job of capturing the fun, playful energy of The Flat Mountain Girls. If you close your eyes while listenning to it, you can almost see them, dancing with their instruments on the front porch in their prairie dresses, swilling whiskey between songs. It just makes ya smile! My 10 year old daughter loves it, too. The Flat Mountain Girls have become something of a role model for her, inspiring her to take more guitar lessons.
