Teye lives in an antique Airstream in Austin, Texas, with his wife, flamenco dancer Belén, and three dogs. The dogs are as international as Teye himself and respond to commands in three languages: English, Dutch and Spanish. Teye was born in Fryslân, the rebel region of the Netherlands: "The Frisians are the most stubborn people in the north-western part of Europe, as characteristic and colourful as the gipsies of Andalusia and my neighbours in the Lone Star State."
At an early age Teye picked up the guitar without encouragement by his family and took off on a mission of his own. After much travelling all over Europe, he met a group of gypsies in Spain, who became good friends and offered him the chance to learn the authentic flamenco style of guitar playing, his great true passion. They eventually gave Teye his honorary nickname: "El Gitano Punky", the rock 'n' roll gypsy, partly because he fit in so well with them and their musical culture, partly because of Teye's earlier electric guitar playing. He was even invited to gypsy weddings, the highest honour ever to be given to a "payo" (non-gypsy).
Teye's style is very gypsy, but at the same time modern, with a good understanding of current western music and the classical guitar technique. His training includes: classical guitar at the conservatory of music in Groningen and rock music at the conservatory of Rotterdam, where he graduated cum laude. He studied flamenco guitar with Juán Muñóz, Paco Peña, Manolo Sanlúcar, Manolo Lozano "El Carbonero" and José Luís Balao of the "Catedra de Flamencología" in Jeréz de la Frontera, with Paco Serrano, and most importantly, the gypsies from Córdoba (the family Plantón), Morón de la Frontera and Jeréz.
Teye has performed as a flamenco guitarist in countless solo shows, in duos, and with various dance companies in Holland, Germany, France, Spain, Czechoslovakia and America. He performed with the gypsy company of the Plantóns in Córdoba, Spain and accompanied Carmen Cortés on Spanish television. More recent, he toured extensively in America and Europe as flamenco guitarist with the Joe Ely band and played with Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Rosanne Cash and Lyle Lovett. Great examples of his guitar playing can be found on Joe Ely's critically acclaimed albums: "Letter to Laredo"; "Twisting in the Wind" and "Live at Antone's".
Five years ago Teye and Belén stepped into the limelight with a cd and a flamenco ensemble, both titled "Viva el Flamenco". David Lynch, writing in the Austin Chronicle, called the album a powerful tribute to the spirit of flamenco and a commanding calling card: "Flamenco, the fiery fusion of Spanish folk, North African rhythms, and the virtuosity of the Gypsy peoples, is not an easy style to learn, requiring razor-sharp technique combined with emotional intensity. For Teye, this intensity vibrates boldly like the soundboard of his custom-made, gut-string guitar. Saying Teye's playing is powerful, as in "Bulerías del Pirata," is like saying sangria has a kick".
Teye-and-Belén's brand-new 2004 release "FlamencObsesionArte" was previewed in Sevilla at WOMEX, October 23, 2003. Sello Autor and Discos Corazong will release the album in Spain immediately after, the rest of the world will have to wait until the spring of 2004.
"FlamencObsesionArte" includes a great underwater-videoclip, shot by Jacques Cousteau's team off one of the Virgin Islands.

Great album!
author: M BuckleyI bought this CD based on having heard Teye's "Viva el Flamenco" CD more than a year ago; this album was equally as impressive.
Guitar work that is a delight, and worthy of study.
author: Terry HulseyWhy the guitar virtuosity of Teye is not more widely known is a mystery. This is especially so when you consider that the two rumbas on the disc, Sol del Caribe and Rio Ancho, are perfect candidates for being covered by a mainstream guitarist such as Peter White. But the real beauty of flamenco is evident in the farruca, Punta y Tacon. This CD is a delight, and worthy of study by serious guitarists.
