notes

Terry’s new recording is at CDBaby and is entitled "FIRST TAKE".
It’s a trio format with guests on a few cuts. Gary Novak produced it and played drums.
Dave Carpenter played bass. The guests include Don Grusin, Scott Kinsey
and Brandon Fields. It’s very good. Check it out.

One of the most influential but unknown guitar players, Terry Haggerty is buried treasure. As the guitarist with the Sons of Champlin, Haggerty was always accorded the full respect of his peers; players like:

“If it wasn’t for Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter and you (Terry), I’d just be a blues guitarist”
Carlos Santana

“Terry was an early influence on my guitar playing”
Robben Ford

“Terry Haggerty has always been a unique and original player, and a lot of fun to listen to. He is highly inventive, incorporating the tone of rock and the harmonies of jazz”
Jerry Garcia

“Hearing Terry Haggerty in that most special and incredible of 70’s bands, The Sons Of Champlin, was an inspirational turning point for me at 16 and I never looked back. An L-5 through 4 cranked Fender Twins. Jazz-Rock, defined. And the funkiness . . Terry’s fantastic, innovative playing blew open my musical life and the impact still resounds in my own music. “
Wayne Krantz

“A true maverick. . . One of the first I heard who showed me that you don’t have to sound like everybody else.”
Mike Miller

He has been known throughout the world, among the guitar cognoscenti, by the handful of recordings he made over the two decades of the Sons' existence.
But even now, as he prepares to release his first solo instrumental recording, he remains something of an unknown.
The great volume of material that Terry has recently created has led to this CD, entitled “TERRY HAGGERTY”, a sampler of sorts. Some of the songs are home studio studies. Some have been done in a proper recording studio.
All of it is just a precursor to the full blown studio album in progress. Stay tuned.

Why not five stars , well , other than Terry being one of my all-time guitar "heros" , I miss the low down , funky licks that made the Sons one of the best damn groups EVER to take the stage. I still love the cd and thank Terry for ANY releases as his guitar work is like no other. THANKS Terry !

Beautiful worlds of rich, sensual, sweet and intelligent atmosphere. Listen from far away and breathe them in from root to sky...listen close up and revere his virtuosic celebration of the instrument. This is a rare artist who surrenders to his instrument completely and comes out the other side a true master of it.

  • Excellent!

Great stuff, you can't go wrong with Terry. I remember a solo gig he did at Domaine Chandon in Napa Valley once -he dropped and broke his guitar on the way in, someone ran home and got theirs, and on an unknown, borrowed guitar, he proceeded to play a show that knocked our socks off. What a pro!

  • Worth checking out
    author: Greg

I first heard Terry Haggerty on the Sons of Champlin LP "Loosen Up Naturally" and was blown away (as were most other guitarists who heard him). Terry doesn't sound like everybody else. He doesn't sound like anybody else. And that's what I love about his playing. Today, everybody is trying to sound like everybody else. Terry sounds like himself. His ideas are fresh. As for this CD, it doesn't sound like the Sons. It's Terry's music. And again, it's fresh. I was hoping to hear more uptempo songs on this CD so Terry could do what he does best. He does do that, but I would love to have heard more. But that's my own personal taste. And that's why I gave it four stars instead of five. But...great music. Great playing. I hope young guitarists will check this CD out, as well as die-hard TH fans. It's definitely worth it. . . and long overdue.

  • A guitar players guitar player
    author: paul adams

Is there any more popular instrument to play than the guitar? Christ they are everywhere - and maybe they should be. It's accessable and easy to tote. But it ain't easy to play with uniqueness of purpose and statement. I could go on and on about Terry's playing. But how about just saying that the guy offers a fresh view. And he'll offer you some unique playing. It ain't the same old GUITAR. It's Terry's guitar. Uniquely linear with fresh voicings. I just wish the guy would come out of the woodwork more often. Terry.. are you hiding? paul adams www.pauladams.org
