notes
After more than twenty years of working together in South Florida, pianist Ted Knight and saxophonist Paul Magersuppe have joined forces to release their debut album.
Paul explores a selection of familiar yet neglected jazz standards. David Gibble plays trumpet or fluegelhorn on four tunes, including a a bossa nova version of Coltrane's "Beautiful Love." Paul switches from alto to tenor (and Ted to electric piano) on "Just the Two of Us" and "Too Hot," a Kool & the Gang hit covered by Tom Scott. Vocalist Evelyn Russell is featured on "Lullaby of Birdland." The bassist is Michael Burns and Jean Bolduc is on drums.
Recorded live to digital multitrack in a single session in 2006. Ted's vocal on "The Shadow of Your Smile" is the only overdub.
The album is dedicated to the memory of Ted's bandleader father, Vic Knight, who played for countless music lovers over a 60-year career but never recorded an album of his own.
