notes

After playing together in various groups over the years, three vocalists from the Central Coast of California have teamed up with three of the busiest, most talented musicians to create this fun, energetic group known as The Tatters. Mary Z. Wilson, Erika Harding and Jennie Snyder formed the group, named for the dying domestic art of hand-tatting or lace making, in November of 1998. All three women sing both lead and backup vocals, allowing for flexibility of vocal style and range within the trio which features tight, balanced harmonies. Dan Wilson, Bill Flores and Jack Joshua joined The Tatters to form an incredible back up group affectionately known as The Lowly Sidemen. The versatility of these musicians allows the group to weave a tapestry of sounds together throughout their performance.

A love of roots music with a pure, old-time flavor brought this group together. Their sound has been described as simple but powerful vintage Americana. The Tatters' styles range from Bluegrass to Western Swing, to Hawaiian, gospel and folk music. Consisting mostly of original work by principal songwriter Mary Z. Wilson, with additional songs contributed by Jennie Snyder, Erika Harding, Billy Flores, and Orest Balaban, The Tatters deliver a dynamic and personal live performance.

Individual members of the group have the following festival experiences among their performing credits: Telluride Music Festival, Strawberry Music Festival, Kerrville Folk Festival, Live Oak Festival, Kate Wolf Memorial Festival, Santa Maria Bluegrass Festival, Mixed Bag Festival, Wild Iris Festival, Julian Bluegrass Festival, Follows Camp Festival, High Sierra Festival, Sacramento Blues Festival, Bowlful of Blues, Peer Blues Festival (Belgium), Nice Jazz Festival (France), Vienne Jazz Festival (France) and the Strummin' 'n Struttin' Festival. Special events at which members have performed include the City of Ventura Music Under the Stars Series, City of Ventura's ArtWalk, Ventura Beach Party, Oxnard's Heritage Square Music Series, Avocado Festival and more. They have opened for artists including Bob Dylan, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Timbuk 3, Michael Martin Murphy, Ray Wiley Hubbard, Laurie Lewis, Doc Watson & Jack Lawrence, Marty Stuart, Robin & Linda Williams, The Dillards, Townes Van Zandt, Riders in the Sky and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

"Purity and gentleness wrapped in delicate harmonies together with some great backing musicians make The Tatters' first effort a force to be reckoned with."

"The harmonies are joyous and some of the songs are good enough to be standards."
Victoria Williams

"The Tatters have the charm of the Andrews Sisters mixed with modern day wanderlust swirling round your boots. ...Lovely vocal harmonies with old time musical charm. ... The kind of songs you swear your Grandma used to sing to you at the pickin' parlour. ...Lovely!"
Sara Hickman

"It's an inventive mix of elements, old time folk/country/blues with a good dose of Swing era girl trio harmonies. ...I like the outfits, too! Although much time and effort has gone into arrangements, the end result is still loose, breezy and fun!"

"The Tatters have a refreshing grass roots sound. ... A treat to listen to in contrast to an abundance of generic music these days."

"It's pretty hard to describe The Tatters' music other than to say the vocals are great. Every song is different from the one before, so if you don't like one, just wait a minute. ...Their music is so unusual and so unlike everything else out there that perhaps band members will be able to find their musical niche..."
Bill Locey
Los Angeles Times

"The Tatters are three lovely voices... intertwining in a harmonious fashion with just enough twang and wit. ... It all adds up to a delicious, sonorous down-home hoedown."
