notes
Jake Jefferson(liverpool, UK), born December 16th, 1976, started playing the piano at age 10.
Heavily inspired by Muddy Waters, Lighting Hopkins, Chuck berry and Little Richard, he has been in and out of Blues bands since 1994.
At the age of 17 he was introduced to Electronic Music and began programming on an Atari ST and sampler.
While Studying music at the University of Liverpool, and experimenting with Funk, Soul, and Reggae, he met saxophonist, John Roggensack(a talented Canadian studying Jazz and Funk in Liverpool) and vocalist, Shona Foster.
Together, their passion for drum n' bass, has resulted in an unique sound, (e.g.
"The Way") which Tar Media believes unlocks a new gateway into the already fluid sound of D n' B.
Xploding Plastix(Norway) Imagine Charlie Mingus plucking the bass.
Along comes Gene Krupa on the drums - only with four arms, and playing like an evil spirit possessed him.
Behind the decks Amon Tobin are sneaking in everything from samba rhythms to piano and horn samples.
You are now beginning to get close to the sound of Xploding Plastix - a duo from Oslo, Norway- Hallvard Wennersberg Hagen and Jens Petter Nilsen, and together they are some of the most interesting and refreshing thing that has happened in Norway for a very long time.
With their mixture of obscure jazz-samples, cool beats, melodic feel, an "anything goes"-mentality and quite a bit of humour, they have created their own unique style.
A kind of older Amon Tobin meets Scott Walker on a smoke filled sleazy jazz-club.
Throw in an exquisite taste for film-noire, and we are getting closer.
This is Balearic beats, lo-fi, state of the art fuck-upz, simply sweet! NOON(Poland) What to expect from a 21 year old Polish guy who preferred Brian Eno's MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS over Michael Jackson 's THRILLER when he was like, 12 years old ? The next thing was discovering sample based music.
After being swept away by people like PORTISHEAD and especially the abstract hip-hop of DJ Shadow and DJ Krush he started out making his own music using just his PC and, after a while, a turntable.
[The Technics 1200.. the noon model, so to speak..] The final addition to his setup was a MPC2000 sampler.
But how can you make music if you limit yourself to using only samples? All of which should be strictly from vinyl records as a matter of fact..
The main ingredient of his music is a strong mood...
He knows what he wants and keeps digging the crates util he finds those samples that will help him shape those feelings into music.
He has the rare ability to give a sampler a soul, to control it instead of being controlled by it.
He just knows what he wants and works those tracks until they are right.
It is not techno or hip-hop.
It is not dance.
It is trippy, but not triphop.
Introspective and contemplative are words that come to mind when listening to his tracks.
Nevada Drive(Holland) An unusual blend of VOCALS AND MOODY MUSIC.
NEVADA DRIVE formed in 2000 when it's members, Rene Ahoud and Christien Oele, met each other on the internet searching for audio-equipment.
Both were busy writing and producing tracks for diverse projects.
Soon they decided to join forces and start their own project hence NEVADA DRIVE was born.
NEVADA DRIVE reflects the very different backgrounds and musical experiences of these two.
Christien Oele was trained as a classical pianist and made a name as a rapper and keyboard player in the Amsterdam dance-scene.
She contributed to many different albums, mainly as female vocalist and songwriter and had started producing some of her own tracks.
Rene Ahoud studied sonology and audio engineering, wrote and produced tracks for very different acts and has recently written and recorded the S/T album Avenging Space, which was released by dDrecords.
Both Christien and Rene have also written music for artists in other fields, like modern dance, spoken word, video-installation and multimedia..
With NEVADA DRIVE they've created a space of their own, hidden somewhere in their universe of dance, alternative pop and chill-out loungemusic.
There's Christien's sultry voice and there are Rene's sonic landscapes.
NEVADA DRIVE is about a surface of lyrical adventures and smouldering beats that leave the listener lingering in temptation about what lies underneath.
Beat Chemist(Canada) Breakbeat extremist out of Canada swings from the downbeat side of the rhythmic spectrum to the upbeat.
Traversing Trip-Hop/Ambient Breakbeat territory covered by Portishead and DJ Shadow before exploring Jungle/Illbient surliness as constructed by Photek and DJ Spooky, the Beat Chemist fills emotionally-vacant atmospheres with thought-provoking, sample-heavy arrangements like a night spent in solitude pouring over the essential works of Michel Foucault.
Irritated breaks and implosive basslines settle into your consciousness like 2nd degree burns softened by icy, soothing synths and raw, organic melodies.
Late nights in the studio transform mental imagery into an aural soundtrack for life.
e g o(Holland) Baz Mattie is the man behind the pseudonym...
His musical resume spans over a decade, starting out as the drummer behind several succesful Dutch funk, rock and pop bands, the most well-known and most recent of which was the internationally succesfull Junkie XL, a big beat dance project.
He toured and recorded with all of these bands, and in the meantime he developed his own musical ideas and started building a studio; a sampler, computer and mixingdesk were the main instruments to help him to create, to shape and polish his own music.
So far a number of soundtracks for commercials, short feature films and the theatre have been completed.
In addition, he's established the triphop/drum&bass band MIMEZINE which made their official debut this year with their album Indeep [Pressure records].
"Soulsearcher" is an example of what is to grow into a full album: an album to be filled with densely layered soundscapes, with influences as diverse as Cool Jazz [Miles Davis], Sly Stone and Ennio Morricone, to name but a few.
The label 'triphop' or 'lounge' doesn't do justice to this music.
It can be better desvribed as a musical soundtrack to the big city, where you can feel lost and alone despite the crowds and noise that surrounds you.
e g o is using a combination of live instruments, synths and samples to give an organic and human quality to his tracks.
Avenging Space(Holland) Avenging Space started as a studio project and consists of Rene Ahoud: Production & Martin Van Lier: Guitar.
Rene contributes not only his technical expertise as the project's certified "sonologist" and owner of the Klankbeeld Amsterdam Studio, but foremost he adds the qualities of an outstanding musician and refined composer.
Martin, a self proclaimed "retro-Rocker" with a fascination with electronic music, adds warmth and an organic quality which closes the gap that too often exists between the sequencer and the Blues guitar.
Viktor Sjoberg(Sweden) He's called Viktor Sjöberg and he's living in the quiet Swedish community of Pixbo.
He got into music making by sampling things such as plastic bags and rubbing a little microphone against the speakers.
This lead to a rave review in a local newspaper and strange looks from the other kids at summercamp.
His inspirations range from hip hop producer Peanut Butter Wolf to filmmaker David Lynch and author Jack Kerouac via the legendary Lee 'Scratch' Perry.
His music is moody, mainly because it's based on introspection and emotion, on the mysteries that are buried deep inside us.
It's beat-orientated though, but minimalistic, beats and melodies both stripped to the bone.
Sometimes it is like listening to movie soundtracks for which the movie still has to be made - but who knows what tricks he has up his sleeve ? Melampyre(France) Saying that the forming of Melampyre(France) was obvious would be an exaggeration.
Let's go back quickly : We're in 1996, and three beginner musicians meet once a week to play covers (metal or thrash at this time ;-).
But slowly and therefore gradually, their desire for creating a coherent work, fed by their common musical influences, gives birth to Melampyre.
Trip-hop, post-rock, post-hop or houla hop....call their music what you want, but don't reduce it to a musical genre.
Even if Massive Attack or Portishead are the common denominator, the musical culture of Melampyre is also composed of Type O'Negative or Stevie Ray Vaughan.
If you listen to the first three Melampyre EPs, you will discover that Melampyre belongs to its own world, themes, & sounds...
in short, it's personal, original and dreadfully attractive.
Lemon Drop Kid(USA) "...travels through the dark side encounter softened breaks, alien bass lines and bleary electro textures...bring your own space suit..." lemon Drop Kid(USA) is Daniel Swinney a young electronic musician whose modus operandi is delivering an eclectic mix of electronic styles.
LDK weaves elements of dance, trip hop, ambient, industrial into his own unique blend..above all the eclecticism, lemon Drop Kid's trademark is personality.
Its one thing to put together competent electronic music, its another thing to do so in a non-mechanical and entertaining manner.
Smas(Switzerland) smas: Super Market All Stars.....4 musicians - guitar/guitar/drums/vocals - from Berne & Zurich, Switzerland, playing in 4 different bands, the conglomerate produces organic sounds with a techno edge...rave, indie pop and Found Sound....
now exploring the supermarket of electronic music.
Feng Shui(USA) lickety split, lickety split, like an old time ice social feng shui keeps the jams frozen on ghetto blasted popsicle sticks.
you know it's the real deal when the mix slides effortlessly through king tubby, nightmares on wax, the beatles, prince paul, tortoise, and the irresistible force all in one swipe.
feng shui(USA) is the production | mix moniker of anne pope and toon.
the duo have released three critically acclaimed mixtapes on lunchbox recordings: slow motion engineer, flying dutch, and paper crown.
A fourth mix extravaganza, optional overeasy, is currently in the works.

heavy beats
author: DJ DudemanGreat record. Good to get jiggy.

author: beat manNice disc. Track 1 is totally happening. Furious beats and smoking sax work. Nevada Drive is also great as usual. Wouldn't mind seeing a second release from these artists.
Great CD
author: George DisgruntedThis is a great CD. It is too bad the artists will never see a penny from this record. Songs are well written and performed. It is too bad that the CD was released by criminals.
Track 1 is worth the price alone!
author: Tommy LipumaTrack 1 is the best thing I have heard in a long time. That saxophonist is stellar. Why hasn't he put out any albums yet? The rest of the disc is OK. But it is all about track one. Jake Jefferson was lucky to find that John Roggensack. Nice CD. Spread the word. Peace.
mind-expanding!!!
author: Laurenabsolutely mind-blowing! so expansive and fresh you feel like you're lost in a little purple room that has suddenly swollen into a red psychadelic mass of your thoughts. perfect music to first introspect, then explore with... fabulous!

Overall, a perfect cd to chill to. Track 1 seems way out of place with this compliation, but it's still a good song. This is a must have for the mellow soul.
