notes

"With the three long pieces on this release, Sylken proves that they are a group which excels at pushing the envelope of live ambient music, as the recording goes from darker subtly dissonant passages to moments of drop-dead beauty."

~ Bill Binkelman ... Wind & Wire ~

---------------

"This is great! It sounds like the desires and dreams of a Film Noir-ish Los Angeles on rainy night in the Orion Nebula ... a really cool blend of light and dark. I can't believe you play this live ... so many rich, interesting things going on and the sound is really good ... big, clear and dynamic."

~ Sara Ayers ... vocalist, composer, recording artist ~

---------------

"PiNG is a disc of excellent drone and spacemusic, recorded live at The Ambient Ping in Toronto, Ontario. Sylken is one of those artists that somehow manages to blend drone with spacemusic to an astounding effect and this CD is one of the finest examples of his work."

~ Stephen Philips ... Dark Duck Records ~

---------------

"PiNG is a stunning live presentation of this ever evolving musical collective. Opening with 'Here, Then Gone', Sylken creates a deep and foreboding environment given a small hint of light. Quiet synth lines pass by in the darkness, like comets travelling through space, burning brightly for only an instant, a faded memory the next. 'This Sonorous Apparition' follows in the same dark vein, sound bended and folded in ways that shouldn't be possible, and yet becomes all the more beautiful for it. It's all good ... 'NGC 720' closes the disc, conjuring images of distant stars and nebulae swirling in the depths of space, a ballet of astronomy. Notes ebb and flow, grow and swell, rise and fall in a rapturous swirl, sweetly caressing the listener ... sensual.

Sylken has a masterful approach to creating beautiful and emotional music through their keyboards, coaxing notes and tones that others would be unable to create. Hearing the sonic bliss they're responsible for I'm oftentimes more inclined to think of the two of them as magicians more than musicians. With three pieces of long form ambience, all with their own unique charms, Sylken fully captures the magic of ambient performance and the beauty of space. Highly recommended."

"As Sylken, Eric Hopper and friends unleash immersive atmospheres of lush shape-changing musicality. 'Ping' is the thing for those deep space floatations right in your head."

~ David J Opdyke ... AmbiEntrance ~

"This CD is loaded with great experimental atmospheres and deep e-music. Dark textures create auras of mass confusion. This music is perfect for 'hard' listening."

  • This is a must-have of ambient music.
author: Mark Mahoney, The Amaranth Signal

PiNG is amazing on several levels. First of all it's quality ambient music. There are so many ambient CDs out there that all sound alike. Some will stick in some offensive dance/disco drum tracks and call it cuting edge. But that's not what Sylken has done. Sylken has captured the true spirit of ambient music and takes the listener on lush journeys of inner space. Don't look for repetitive sequenced tracks here. This is the epitome of drifting free-spirited ambient music. Put this CD on, close your eyes, and let Sylken guide you through some new exciting terrain. What is even more amazing is that this CD is from a live performance. If you are a fan of ambient music, then Sylken's PiNG is a must-have.

  • A smooth swirling sonic journey
    author: Raseac Cisru

One of the BEST instrumental ambient works I've ever heard. Three musicians weave a tapestry of perfectly-meshing aural sound sculptures (in a live setting!) that boggles the mind. How could they pull it off? They do. The audio and production are flawless, deep and organically fluid. Imagine drifitng down a river that glows from within with multicoloured phosphorescent light, sometimes slowly, sometimes forcefully, but always gracefully. You silently curse when you reach your destination, for you wish the journey to continue indefinitely. You not only hear this music, you can see and feel it. Five stars, my friends, five stars.
