notes

"Sweet Hollywaiians" are amazing Japanese hot string band and play '20s,'30s hawaiian, swing, ragtime, blues, italian and calypso music.... Hollywood style!!

They respect the string virtuosos like Sol Hoopii,Roy Smeck,Eddie Lang,Carl Kress,Giovanni Vicari and play many many instruments......Guitar,Hawaiian Steel Guitar,Ukulele,Mandolin,Mandola,Banjo and Bass.

When you listen to their sound, you will be really very impressed by their level of musicianship, clever arrangements and feel for playing the '20s,'30s music.

These guys are terrific!!

ROBERT CRUMB
"I have listened to "Sweet Hollywaiians" and found the music excellent, exactly to my taste!
I was surprised how good the music was,in fact!!"

JANET KLEIN
"If I was to order my favorite choices from the Victor Record Catalog 1927, that stack of shellac 78 rpms would have sounded like this! Tom Marion and the Sweet Hollywaiians have lovingly and skillfully rendered a choice selection of Hawaiian, Italian, Tinpan Alley and more...
my heartfelt praise and appreciation for making beautiful old music live long."

I used to live in Hawaii and listening to this CD definitely takes me back. They nailed the sound perfectly! The music's awesome. Plenty of happy/energetic songs and relaxing ones for all to enjoy.

  • We LOVE to cruise around playing Hula Girl!
    author: Brooke Stewart

What a fun CD to play! We provide transportation for people at the beach in southern California and when we play this in our cruiser, people FLIP out and always ask about it! The song Hula Girl is MY absolute favorite!

  • This CD makes you happy!

I am so glad I stumbled across the Sweet Hollywaiians on MySpace (and CD Baby of course)! Definitely one of my favourite CDs at the moment. For an extra dose I go on YouTube and watch them 'live' - just delightful!

  • HULA GIRL o'my dreams

This is the best of the best! You'd be hard pressed to find too many groups that do their thing so smoothly. Sweet Hollywaiians are some of best musicians you'll hear today, and Hula Girl proves it with every song.

  • Eruption of Creativity
    author: Brent Swanson

Happy, fun music with joyous surprises, starting with the sound the recalls Vaughn DeLeath but goes in many directions, including sneaking "12th Street Rag" into "Honolulu Stomp" and some Bizet into "St. Louis Blues." I'm hooked!

I absolutely love this cd! The music is like taking the best part of summer, adding a cool autumn breeze, being with your best friends, and shaking it all together. Superb!

Loved the album. I almost envison some lucky sailor in Hawaii during the early to mid 1930's listening to this on shore-leave as they zip around in an old Willy's Jeep...I plan on ordering one of their other albums as well. Easy Breezy Japaneezy!

  • So Fun!

I just love this and play it over and over again. They play some really intricate stuff, but I laugh every time I hear "working for the yankee dollar"!

  • Very very good!
    author: June Hodge

I love this CD, and would describe it as 'happy music'. You can hear the joy shining through on the entire album. It's the first CD of this old musical style that I've bought, but this has got me interested enough to want to find more of it. Recommended.

  • Robert Crumb is absolutely right!
    author: Jesper Deleuran

These guys play extremely well. They bring you back to the 30's. I have several CD's with hawaiian music from the 20's and 30's. The difference between those recordings and the Sweet Hollywaiians is that the Hollywaiians are better produced, and show better musiciansship. Very, very good listening indeed.

  • Outstanding!
    author: M. Fox

Extremely well done! As noted elsewhere, these boys are tight and have the appropriate harmonies down pat. A lovely collection of Hawaiian and string band pieces that only make the connoisseur politely stand up and shout for more. One can only hope that this highly talented group will find its way back to the USA in the near future. Their next album will certainly be worthy of a critical listen.

  • What a Delight!
    author: Dana Mitchell

This CD is great fun and baffles my neighbors. Really, its wonderful renditions of familiar favorites and a few surprises.

  • Like finding gold!
    author: Joseph Sixpack

Their musicianship is tight, their harmonies are enthusiastic and their awful English is just part of the charm. (I wonder how these songs would go down if they translated the lyrics and sang in Japanese instead). While driving into Honolulu today I played "Hapa Howry Hura Girl" about eight times in a row full blast and grinned like an idiot the whole time. I am nearly sixty years old and I am usually a bit more subdued. Got the same buzz from the Sweet Hollywaiians as I did from the King Bennie Nawahi CD a few years back. Check these guys out on YouTube. Big, Big Fun!

  • Sweet!

Love this CD. Great twist on some classic material. It's one of those CD's that's great to pop in for weekend mornings, pour a cup of coffe and sit back and smile to. I will be enjoying this one over and over again.

  • author: Steve

Great cd. My only complaint was that it was too short! No one else really playing the old vintage Hawaiian guitar driven music tightly and with strong vocals. Give me more!

  • Hula Girl
    author: John Mumford

These guys really swing. If more groups played like them then everyone would be playing tenor banjo and Hawaiian guitar.
