Soulful rootsy pop with an edge

notes

Connecting the geographical and musical dots in Suzanne McNeil’s young life could get complicated. She was born in Massachusetts, but grew up on the east coast of Canada on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, where making music is as natural as breathing. Her love of people led her to a career in social work, but it was her love of singing that pulled her away from her island home to a life of road tours across the American Midwest---her first true musical journey where she thought she was a little closer to Heaven---getting paid to sing. Thousands of miles and hundreds of performances gave her the chance to hone her talents---her rootsy soulful singing, her jazzy and folk-rock songwriting, and a powerful on-stage charisma most seasoned professions still hope for.

In late 2005 she put pen to paper for her first original CD, “Bliss.” Recorded at Ice Station Zebra in Medford, Mass., with award-winning engineer Ducky Carlisle, “Bliss” takes the listener across the dreamscape of McNeil’s songwriting, from pop to serious alt-rock grit. With radio play from Nova Scotia through New England, and across the world via many internet stations paying attention to the cream of the indie crop, McNeil’s delivery is living up to the buzz.

She maintains a busy performance schedule across the Maritimes and New England. McNeil also feeds her soul through directing a parent-child preschool music program called “Music Together,” which was designed by a child psychologist and an off-Broadway composer which enhances the musical and intuitive gifts of children.

Suzanne is currently writing her second original CD.

“…A versatility that is unmatched, as jazz, country and pop are all within her range…McNeil’s debut album, ‘Bliss,’ on her own Candescent label, is a startlingly vivid taste of how she melds disparate influences into compelling folk-rock and pop.”

“She’s funky and upbeat as she exudes more than a hint of country underpinnings in her songwriting.”
*** Metronome Magazine (Boston)

“Her natural songwriting talent shines bright in ‘Bliss’. It’s relaxing, smooth and 100% pure enjoyment.”

One listen to “Down the Highway” will have you cryin’ in your beer and wishing you could have been there to beat the piss out of the dude that broke her heart.”

This CD is incredibly refreshing. The decription of it being "rootsy soulful pop with an edge" is right on! The melodies are smooth and the lyrics are real. Suzanne's voice is unlike others out there today- it is soothing and a true pleasure to listen to. I will recommend to others- no questions.
