notes
Susan de Jong, originally from South Australia, started singing jazz at 17 when she started college and has since performed in Jazz festivals around Australia including the Adelaide, Sydney, Manly and Montsalvat Jazz Festivals.
In 1999 Susan moved to Christchurch, New Zealand, to teach singing and jazz studies at the Christchurch Jazz School.
Her performance experience includes collaborations with many of the top jazz players in New Zealand and Australia, including performances at the Tauranga National Jazz Festival, Nelson Jazz festival and the Christchurch Jazz and Arts festivals.
Though jazz is a great love Susan can also be seen singing the odd blues tune or disco ditty. “I have very eclectic tastes. As long as I’m singing I’m happy.”
Susan’s 1st solo album "It's about Time" (2002) which was released to much anticipation contains jazz standards with a new twist like 'Love for Sale', and 'Straight, No Chaser'. She also presents some contemporary standards and two original tunes penned by de Jong.
Her discography includes “I Hear Music” (2005) a duets album with NZ pianist Doug Caldwell of jazz standards, “Volare” (2004) a trio singing three-part harmony on jazz and popular tunes, and more recently, an album of original Blues tunes by organist Nigel Spiers, entitled “US Odyssey” (2008) and a live album with ‘Julie Mason and the Jazz Diva’s’ entitled “Charmed Life” (2007), containing Jazz melodies made famous in the 1950’s.
