notes

This is really fresh. Surf, espionage, Latin jazz, island cool, and most unusual. Surferigno are not at all trad, but they sure do play some cool tunes! (...) Surferigno create original music with elements of surf, Polynesia, and many other sounds. Excellent and well thought out arranging.

-Phil Dirt, Reverb Central

Surferigno: an incredible musical hulk

Variety is the key word when it comes to Surferigno. This Montreal instrumental trio can move in many musical directions. At their recent record launch, the band's short set included instrumental tributes to Link Wray and Black Sabbath as well as an impressive cover of Queen's Radio Ga Ga.

Featuring the talents of guitarist Jérôme Campbell, bassist Hugo Berthiaume and drummer J-F Beauregard, the band has just released its debut album, an impressive 22-track package of twanging, reverbed guitar riffs and steady pounding rhythms.

Recorded mostly in April 2004, this eponymous album took nearly two years to put together. "The important thing is that it was made without any government money - it's completely self-financed," explains Campbell proudly.

"We went to the Caisse Populaire and took out several loans. We wanted to show everyone that since nobody was interested in signing us, we'll do it ourselves and have the final word on how it turns out. Young bands should know that it's possible to do it by yourself."

Besides the obvious allusion to surf music, the band's name contains a reference to actor Lou Ferrigno, a.k.a. the Incredible Hulk.

"We always thought Ferrigno was a funny name, but over the years we came to respect him. He's much stronger than us and has lots of muscles. And that's what we try to produce - music with muscle.

"And as far as the 'surf' goes, we're not really a traditional surf band, but rather a rock instrumental band."

-Phil Dirt on "Panic in Tokyo": A song with a rockin' riff and surf bridges. It's a cool song with a slightly less than gimmicky thing going on - less because it works really well without making the song silly. An excellent surfy track!
-Phil Dirt on "Mr. Lou": The title led me to wrongly expect a version of "Miserlou." Instead it's an almost Ventures meets Duane Eddy spy song. Interesting, rhythmic, and compelling, with a circular riff and whammy dipped guitar lines. Very cool!
-Phil Dirt on "Magnum": (...) an espionage vs. Russian song that's both odd and compelling. Very sophisticated, yet surfable and simple. The drums are very cool, almost cowboy rolling, while the guitars weave several styles into a web of danger and deceit. Excellent.
-Phil Dirt on "Honolulu Nocturne": The sea gently laps an island shore in this Hawaiian-esque number. Gentle and slow moving, with a very pretty melody line and scenes of sunset vacation in Kona. Quite nice.

Parfait, quoi.

  • Excellent eclectic & psychadelic surf music
    author: Karl Chen

This CD is a great cinematic experience! Surf music at its best, although almost every song has a different feeling to it - which makes it simply remarkable! I was already familiar with the rockin' beats that Surferigno can execute, but I was genuinely amazed at the more psychedelic stuff like "La peste". The best music I bought in a long time!

  • Quel surf!
    author: Neal

Quebec band Surferigno manages the seemingly impossible by forging their very own brand of surf music. Familiar yet foreign, their music is a mixture of styles that are at once both European and North American. The result is a rock opera, of sorts; a concept piece that flows seamlessly from track to track. Nicely done!
