Sunil Sawani has been writing and recording quirky pop songs since he was 15, but only recently decided to start putting music out in the physical CD format. Usually focusing on the vocal melody and simple arrangements, the music is full of hooks and catchiness, along with inventive lyrics making use of abstract ideas and wordplay. He lives in Troy, MI and also plays in his full band project, The Low Hello (http://www.thelowhello.com for information and free tracks).

If we learned anything this year from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, I mean besides that long band names are hard to remember, it's that self-recorded and distributed records can still take you a long way. Enter Troy resident Sunil Sawani, self-described as "all about the melody," and his self-released five-song EP. Recorded with members of the now-defunct Tenley, Tenille (get it?) is filled with quirky indie pop cleverness and, well, melody. The lyrical sense/no-sense metaphors will remind you of Stephen Malkmus.
In fact, the most (un-)specific way to describe this music is that it sort of fits in that Pavement/Mountain Goats/Guv'ner bedroom pop category.
The verdict on the tracks: While everyone enjoys the bouncy wordplay of Big Arm, there is something about Fragments that I think makes it the album's strongest track. Maybe it's because he sings about folding laundry, but most likely it's the melody. Which Sunil is all about.
