notes
"Sugarplum Fairies provide us with a sultry blend of low key, essentially indie, electric guitars and breathy, Nicoesque vocals. Silvia Ryder's voice has a particular sophistication that, on paper at least, would be classed as idiosyncratic with this kind of music. Nevertheless, it works phenomenally well. This band really do deserve your respect and undivided attention." (Peoplesound UK)
Vienna-raised and California-based duo Silvia Ryder and Ben Bohm are the nucleus of Sugarplum Fairies (the supporting cast is ever-rotating). Their music is laced with surreal images that seem to be part dream diary, part coded messages and part cynical observations and Ryder's breathy, hypnotic vocals evoke comparisons to the late chanteuse Nico of The Velvet Underground.
Since the release of their debut album "Flake" in 1998 the Sugarplum Fairies have gained exposure by receiving nationwide airplay at college and NPR stations.
For their sophomore release "Introspective Raincoat Student Music" the duo has teamed up with drummer Keith Mitchell of Mazzy Star, electric bassist Miiko Watanabe (Eggtooth, Holly Vincent, Tracy And The Hindenburg Ground Crew), upright bassist Warren Kaye (Loren Ellis) and keyboard player Louis Durra (Moris Tepper, The Mystery Band)

Excellent
author: RonThis record is excellent. The songs are very good. The instrumentals are sublime. Slyvia's voice is enchanting and beautiful, and has an exceptionally pleasing presence. Repose, sophisticated, introspective...

Really nice music, full of sun and sophisticated guitars; a sweet voice tunes in with words and tunes you'll helplessly hum all day long after 3rd time listening. If I had to drown, couldn't it be in this soft sea of candy?!
good moody music
author: rishardThe music on this CD would be great for driving down an endless stretch of US highway as the sun sets. It is also great for so many other occasions. I really like the song "touch down or fly," the vocals are entrancing and the instrumental adds greatly to the music. The moodiness of the CD is what makes it great. The lyrics, the almost elegaic tone of the vocals, the instrumentation, all of it is so wonderful.
