notes
Jazz Vocalist Sue Matthews first appeared in 1991, releasing the traditional jazz album Love Dances that year. Her "silky smooth", "honey-toned", "expressive" smoky croon caught on with audiences and critics alike. Two years later, her WHEN YOU'RE AROUND scored her another hit. She spent most of the 90's touring behind these two albums and appeared at every sort of jazz showcase or festival she could make it to. Finally, in 2002, One At A Time brought her back to the world of jazz recording." (Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide).
Sue Matthews once again brings a fresh approach to the jazz standard and much more. WHEN YOU'RE AROUND garnered more national and international attention with a ranking in the top 20 of the Gavin and R&R Jazz Charts. This jazz singer, whose "...delivery is intimate, flawless and smooth" (Keith and Kent Zimmerman, Gavin), brings you another 13 to showcase her ability to present the many flavors of jazz.
Backed by stellar musicians headed once again by pianist Stefan Scaggiari (Concord Jazz), the list includes bassists Keter Betts (Ella Fitzgerald)and Greg Grainger (Paul Scofield), guitarist Paul Bollenbach, drummer Mike Smith, with a driving horn section of Jimmy Hayward, Chris Battistone and Richard Orr. Matthews ignites the arrangements with her breezy abandon and smoldering style.
Matthews' performance credits are varied from the top Mid-Atlantic jazz clubs, concert halls, jazz festivals and television studios, to these highlights: featured artist with the Calgary Philharmonic,Canada; Mid-Atlantic Jazz Showcase at the annual JazzTimes Convention; Seventh Annual Cabaret Convention held at New Yor City's Town Hall; seven-time featured artist at the Clifden ArtsWeek Festival, County Galway, Ireland; toured Hungarian schools by invitation of the Fulbright Commission showcasing American jazz and blues with her group Guys & Doll; two-time recipient of the Maryland States Arts Council Individual Artist Award in Solo Vocal Performance.
"Sue Matthews...a bona fide jazz singer. Her phrasing is a dream...her articulatin's razor-sharp." (JazzTimes)
"Matthews shines on the ballads, caressing the lyrics and letting the music do what it's supposed to to." (L.A. JazzScene)
