Substantial

Sacrificial Lambs (The Prequel to Sacrifice)

CD permanently out of stock. Sorry!

His beats are up to par and his rap ability is a step beyond most of the mediocre MC's who debut today, which makes the various references to him being the "+Best Kept Secret+ since Diamond D" seem all the more apt. -Rapreviews.com

notes

Brooklyn resident "Substantial", originally from Maryland, is an emcee in the truest sense of the word. He has spent the last several years developing his skill as an outstanding lyricist and upholding the art of beat boxing (which he feels is a lost element of hip-hop). Like most hip-hop artist, his surroundings influenced his music as he began to come of age. But not in the way that it has influenced most. Instead, Substantial chooses to illustrate through his music how no matter what the obstacle you can over come. "If reality sucks, why would you want to "keep it real", when we can make it better! Life is what we make it."

Rakim, Krs 1, Big Daddy Kane, and Common are some of Substantial's major influences in the category of MC'ing. As far as beat boxing Buffy (R.I.P.), Doug E. Fresh, and Rahzel have inspired him to keep the art alive. Yet his talents do not end there, he uses his ear for music to create his own unique style of production under the name "Subtracktion". In the future he plans on becoming equally respected as a lyricist and producer. He made his debut as a producer on his solo release "Substantial Evidence". He is currently focusing on production for artists such as Nuyorican slam poets Ana Caona & The Marxman, Insanate (pronounced Insanity), U.V. & many more.

Substantial has released numerous singles since 2000 ("Lyrical Terrorists" w/ L-Universe, "Home Sweet Home", "Remembering Dave", "Kalitwutchawon2", "If I Was Your Mic", and Invisible Man). All of which combined have sold close to 20,000 copies worldwide (Each single was only released on vinyl with the exception of "Invisible Man"). His debut LP "...to this union a sun was born" sold 2,000 copies in 2 weeks after it's released in Japan by Hyde Out Productions/Dimid Recordings (Oct.2001). The LP also remained in the top 10 for record sells two months in a row at the Virgin Megastore in the town of Ikebukuro in Tokyo, Japan. In the month of November, it actually out sold artist such as Ja Rule, DMX, Jermaine Dupri, Faith Evans, and Angie Stone. The LP's U.S. release date was January 2001. To this day "To This Union..." has received critical acclaim around the world and Substantial's new release Substantial Evidence is headed on the same path. It has received rave reviews from magazines and websites alike such as React Magazine, Beautiful Decay, Import Tuner and Cellarnoise.com.

From performing as an opening act for Slick Rick to headlining the Hyde Out Productions tour in Japan, Substantial has been making his presence felt as a strong performer in the world of hip-hop. He has proven on many occasions that he has what it takes to win emcee battles. In May of 1999 he won the Ultimate MC Battle tournament held at Rutgers University New Jersey. Substantial has also put his talents to use as an opening act for other recording artists such as Slick Rick, Brand Nubian, Beatnuts, Heltah Skeltah, and Lord Hav Mercy formerly of Flipmode Squad. But his biggest triumph as a performer was his Tour of Japan back in late 2001. Instead of opening for other acts, he was finally blessed with the opportunity to be the potential headliner that he is. Ripping up stages all throughout central and southern Japan.

Besides his solo projects, Substantial has also been featured on and collaborated with other artist on a number of other projects. Such as Tonedeff's "The Hyphen (EP)" (QN5 Music/Yosumi Records) 2001, "Game Over 2" (Yosumi Records) 2001, and "Sean John, Twix & New Era present... The Next 24 Vol. 4" (Essential Entertainment) 2002. Also Extended Famm's (Tonedeff, Pack FM, Session & Substantial') critically acclaimed debut album "Happy F**k You Songs" 2002 Nujabes' "Metaphorical Music" 2003 just to name a few. He was also co-writer of the song "Mad City" by O*ASIATIC as heard in the score of the critically acclaimed indie film "Kingston High" 2003.

So if you've been waiting for someone to come along who is loyal to the artform and is dedicated to the elevation of the culture, then Substantial is the M.C. you have been anticipating.

Future aspirations include, production and guest vocal appearances on both Major and Indie label releases, as well as work in films, fashion and graphic design.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Substantial for many years and watching him grow and progress. Some of you might have heard the Substantial Evidence cd a few years back, well he has matured and progressed tremendously while maintaining his humble approach and likeable demeanor. Starving artist paints the pain of those who are involved in giving their all to their art and craft, while songs like what you want deliver wonderful hints of life lessons in an easy to digest manner. If this is any indication of what the full-length album has in store, the fans are in for a great experience, because apparently this is the bulk of songs that DIDN'T make the cut. His breath control, flow, charisma and style is well natured and excellently executed on every track, showcasing a variety of talent that has been building for years. Cop Sacrifice when it drops!!
