notes

The Stillhouse Jammers are four accomplished musicians from Central New England. Their show consists of a wide variety of music to entertain you that we affectionately refer to as "rural & retro bluegrass". You will hear traditional fiddle / banjo numbers, hard-driving bluegrass, tender ballads, as well as several original tunes while each member takes their turn at the mic for lead & harmony vocals. The Stillhouse Jammers are very proud to have placed 2nd in the band competition at 2006 Thomas Point Beach Festival up against some of the very best talent in the Northeast and Canada!

The Jammers have been impressing bluegrass audiences at their recent appearances; including showcasing at the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, the "world-famous" Cantab Lounge, and the North Quabbin Center for the Performing Arts, to name a few. One reason for this is their sensitivity to what constitutes an authentic traditional sound and incorporating that ingredient in their original compositions. This presentation of their show was recorded live on a warm spring day at the LATV studio in Leominster, MA, in 2007. A moment frozen in time, captured with the edginess and honesty that makes a Stillhouse Jammers' live show so memorable.

Rich Hamilton, Jaffrey, NH:
fiddle/vocals
Rich has been fiddling & singing with a number of bands since 1979, most recently Gopher Broke Bluegrass of Vermont. He also has appeared with other bands including the Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show (TX) and Big Country Bluegrass (VA). While each member of the band are songwriters, many original tunes you will hear the Stillhouse Jammers doing have been written by Rich.

Bob Dean, Templeton, MA:
rhythm & lead guitar/vocals
Having learned to play guitar as a teenager, Bob started playing bluegrass in 1990. He has played with a few local bluegrass bands including Gopher Broke Bluegrass of VT until forming the Stillhouse Jammers with Rich. Bob has penned some nice songs, too.

Al Stapleford, Merrimack, NH:
banjo/vocals
We are quite pleased to have Al join the Jammers on banjo. Al, a self-taught banjo picker, has been playing 40 years and we love the energy he brings to the band. He has performed with many New England bands such as, Herb Applin & Berkshire Mtn Boys, Pine Hill Ramblers, Lost River Ramblers and Monadnock.

Carl Jacobs, Keene, NH:
bass/vocals
Carl has been playing bass for 45 years. He has his own distinctive style and can play anything from bluegrass to jazz to reels to rhumbas! A former member of Wade Mainer's Mountaineers, Carl is a composer and vocalist as well.

  • Good music, enjoyable setting
    author: Frank Pawlik

This is a heck of a good bluegrass band so I knew I would like the music but I was not prepared for the way they packaged it. This is not a studio or stage performance but rather a very casual almost jam-like setting where the boys do their tunes in the manner this music was meant to be played and enjoyed. I found this DVD to be very entertaining and easy to watch.

  • THE EPITOME OF FABULOUS MUSICIANS
    author: A. BRUNO

THE MUSICIANS ARE GREAT, AND THE DVD SELLS THEM. I GAVE THE QUALITY OF THE DVD 4 STARS BECAUSE THE CAMERA PEOPLE NEED MORE EXPERIENCE. THEY WORE OUT THE SHOTS FROM THE FLOOR OF EACH MUSICIAN. BETTER LIGHTING NEEDED TO CATCH THE MOMENTS.

  • An outstanding example of tradtional music
author: Don Coppage,Ahchivist,Jerusalem Ridge Bluegrass Music Foundation

Good musicianship, good close harmony, and an ancient, authentic aura make this desired veiwing and listening for all those who long for traditional American music (I'm certainly in that group). The a cappella,LOOKING TOWARD HEAVEN is one you watch over and over.
