notes
"About Time" is Don Stiernberg's inaugural release on Blue Night Records. David Grisman called it "Another Milestone for Jazz Mandolin." It is a delightful mix of tunes from a bygone era, painting various images for the listener --- from a mild summer evening dancing in the moonlight (Polka Dots and Moonbeams) to a steamy night in the back of the old Chevrolet (Fever).
Don plays with authority and tenderness. He can make a mandolin cry or laugh at will. Joined here by guitarist Curt Morrison and bassist Jim Cox, he takes these old favorites to new heights. NPR's "Fresh Air With Terry Gross" has featured the track "Perdido" on numerous occasions, and "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" has become part of the sound track for "The Elegant Universe," an episode of WGBH Television's acclaimed "NOVA" series.
Don and the cats are joined here by several guest artists, all of whom contribute substantially to this beautifully played compendium of American jazz classics.
