notes
Steve Smith and HARD ROAD bring the traditional sounds of Old-time, Bluegrass and Gospel and blend in the original vocal and instrumental works of Smith and Sanders to create the modern/retro sounds of string band music on their latest release Meet Me By the River (dn545) . HARD ROAD features Steve Smith (mandolin, mandola, guitar and vocals), Wayne Shrubsall (banjo, vocals), Chris Sanders (vocals), Bob Hull (guitar, vocals), Eli Copeland( bass vocals). Hard Road evolved into a full group as an extension of Smith's latest cd Hard Road (dn444) released in June 04', a collection of live studio takes with many different musicians including members of the current group.
Steve Smith has been performing for over twenty six years on mandolin and guitar in just about every kind of musical situation from Old-Time, Bluegrass, Country, Irish, Jazz, to chamber styles. He tours nationally as a solo performer, with HARD ROAD and as a freelance musician and records, teaches and conducts workshops at Camp Bluegrass (www.camp bluegrass.com) and Puget Sound Guitar workshop.(www.psgw.org). See the mandolin sessions at (www.melbay.com).
Bob Hull(guitar) and Smith have been performing together for over fifteen years in various settings and instruments ranging from Irish(Balleyheigue) , jazz (Steve Smith Quintet), bluegrass(The Borderline Ramblers). Bob performs on guitar and mandocello and is equally comfortable in all styles of music and has worked in the Particle Astro Physics lab at NMSU for a number of years.
Elijah Copeland, a classically trained bassist, performs with the El Paso, Las Cruces and the Roswell Symphonys and performs with a number of regional jazz groups including the SSQ in addition to HARD ROAD. Eli also creates artistic glass works.
Chris Sanders, vocalist/pianist/ instructor at New Mexico State Univ. since 1996 where she has directed and arranged for several vocal jazz groups, most recently "Cider Jazz". She has two teenage sons and a golf pro husband. In the fall of 2004 she'll be musical director for LEADER OF THE PACK at the Black Box Theater in Las Cruces. She is still looking for a copy of the 45 she recorded with East Bay Ray of the Dead Kennedys and will pay the big bucks if you find one.
Wayne Shrubsall, banjo and vocals, brings a back ground of Old-time/ bluegrass along with a Ph.D. in, American Studies, to HARD ROAD from University of New Mexico, 1985. Shrubsall wrote his dissertation on "The Five-String Banjo in American Popular Culture."
He writes for banjo Newsletter and teaches clawhammer banjo at Camp Bluegrass, (www.campbluegrass.com) and has been performing for over 40 yrs. His extensive discography of recordings, performances and historical presentations rank Shrubsall among the top banjo players internationally.

Meet Me By the River is Excellent Listening!
author: Burney J. CarterMeet Me by the River by Steve Smith and Hard Road is excellent listening. I especially enjoy the Meet Me by the River cut and other Steve Smith vocals. And, there is fine acoustic instrumental play throughout the album.
