notes
Imagine The Beatles’ “White Album” crashing head-on with Wilco’s “Summerteeth.” It’s an electric folk, americana, and brit-rock mix influenced by the likes of Tom Petty, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young. Singer/songwriter Steve Shaw has put together an array of instruments and musicians to create his 20-song vision, “Lay This Burden Down”.
An abundance of guitars mixed with flute, mandolin, melodica, harmonica, banjo, piano, organ, fiddle, and dobro creates a variety and flexibility to this recording that reminds one of the pop rock of ELO and The Beatles to the acoustical folk quaintness of Damien Rice.
Shaw’s lyrics are filled with both pain and understanding; hope and despair. He questions spirituality, religion and politics. Raised in a middle-class family that was deeply rooted in the union trades, Shaw often champions the working class and the social aspects of the poor versus the rich; the powerful versus the powerless.
Shaw also writes from a very personal level, however, as he tries to find a common thread with his listeners. “I know I’m far from perfect, so I don’t preach in my songs. I write from emotion; from the pain I feel about things, whether it’s immediately around me or my weaknesses or fears or questions. I’ve been blessed with one addiction - music. I often write about that relationship I have between me and my music. I’m really just writing from my soul and I think people can relate to those types of vulnerabilities.”
Also included is a 12-page booklet of photos and lyrics. As the leader of the modern rock band Freeze the Hopper from 1994-2000, Shaw toured extensively, recorded two full length albums on the Prometheus Disc indie label, and received rave reviews for both recorded and live performances throughout the Midwest.
"Lay This Burden Down” is 70 minutes of soul purging musicality that has the substance to stay in the mind forever.

Great songs
author: MaryThis is one of the best cds I've heard in a long time. I play it over and over, I can't get enough. It has poetic lyrics, beautiful music and a man with a voice that speaks to the heart. Steve Shaw writes songs that make me think, make me feel, make me sad and make me happy at the same time. This is what music should be.
Steve's CD is the greatest I love listening to it.
author: Laurie AlcornSteve has done a great job with tis CD. I love listening to it over and over. A great collections of song to spend a evening relaxing to.
Brilliant mix of folk-rock, Americana and the British invasion...
author: Malcolm CarterIn a year which has seen a number of really good albums from both new and established artists, Shaw has made his mark. There can't be any music lovers who have heard this album who haven't been touched by Shaw's musical vision. This is simply an album to love, one that will register from the first listen and which will still be turning up new surprises on the 20th play. It's outstanding and like nothing else released this year. There is no denying that this is a brilliant mix of folk-rock, Americana and the British invasion of the early 60's.
Give Yourself a Treat
author: the other Steve ShawMuch richer and far more textured that I had hoped for. A serious blend of a soothing voice, quality lyrics and musicianship. A hint of Irish roots. Some resemblance to Toad the Wet Sprocket at times, yet an inspired original effort. Steve Shaw’s (no relation) CD remains in heavy play in my CD changer

author: Tom HardeeI can't help but wonder what events transpired and who the people are in subject to this cd. What a great unique mix of sound. Lyrics provoke feelings and thoughts that carry me away to a different place. The vocal arangments with the baritone girl are beautiful. Love the mix of banjo, guitar, strings, harp and flute.
Stimulate all of your senses through a variety of sounds.
author: MattieMoLay This Burden Down is a compilation of very deep yet stimulating tracks that hit right at home. Each song has a uniqueness about it that you usually only read about. I find myself getting lost in the lyrics and at times singing along. It is a good buy and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for an exceptional and aspiring sound.
