notes

Whenever a song is recorded by an artist other than the songwriter, it is inevitably subjected to the influences of both the recording artist and the producer. Sometimes the original essence, and even the meaning, of a song is changed. Whether delicate or raw, richly orchestrated or bare-bones, the recordings in this album are true to the vision of their creator, Steve Dorff, one of the most highly regarded Songwriters of our day.

All songs feature the stellar vocal works of Warren Wiebe, today considered one of greatest and most expressive vocalists to have ever lived, world renown for his work with, amongst others, prolific and successful producer David Foster.

The album opens with "A Little Thing Called Life", a gorgeous ballad co-written by acclaimed lyricist Linda Thompson. The song was also recorded by Aaron Neville and released on his album "The Tattooed Heart". Linda Thomspon is also credited as co-writer on another beautiful ballad, "Everytime You Cross My Mind". Two other combinations of beautiful lyrics and an incredible voice that will totally blow you away are "I Never Stopped Loving You" and "Kindred Spirits". The album also features a wonderful remake of "I Just Fall In Love Again", the Anne Murray hit that reached a Billboard's #1, and "The Echo Of Your Whisper" and "And Still Run Out Of Time", two numbers later produced by keyboardist Ricky Peterson on Donny Osmond's mini album "Four", which are two incredible compositions although what truly makes them magical is again the soaring vocal effort that Warren Wiebe graces them with. "Somewhere In Time" closes the set on an emotional note, being the last session taped with Warren on Steve Dorff's studio before leaving us.

The beauty of the songs and the warmth of Warren Wiebe's voice make this album a must have for fans of this style. Get your copy before they're all gone!

  • Some Music From the Heart of Heaven
    author: Mark Hartman

Upon the advice of a musically gifted and trusted friend, I purchased Warren Wiebe's CD "Original Demos" for my birthday. Warren's gift of ethereal song turned out to be my best present. Like the vocalists who preceded him; namely, Bobby Darren, Karen Carpenter, and Eva Cassidy, Warren's legacy fell tragically short of his promise. Ironically, after enjoying Warren's CD many times over, I now can't imagine a world without him in it. All thirteen carefully chosen selections showcased here weave a rich, unforgettable tapestry of comfort and nourishment for the heart and soul with each and every listen. Additionally, Steve Dorff's brilliant piano accompaniment assures the perfect marriage of voice, song, and heart. Mark Hartman

  • How Great of Steve Dorff To Release These Demos... Thanks!
    author: Rob Whiteman

I usually don't go in for writing reviews. Taste is a personal thing. And why any of us are moved by one piece of music over another is what makes us all creative listeners in our own rights. However, writing about this particular compilation, I'm hopeful that someone out there will be blessed in adding it to their collection. With apologies to Mr, Dorff, although I appreciate very much his talents as a song writer, I am not as familiar with HIS work, as I am with Warren Wiebe's. I first heard him sing the title song to a movie called, "Listen To Me" with Celine Dion over the beginning and closing credits. It was produced by David Foster and arranged by Jeremy Lubbock - masters at climbing inside the meat of a lyric and fleshing it out with their own aural perspective in ways that maybe even the song writers whose songs they have arranged probably didn't hear when they wrote them. I then heard him on Foster's "River of Love" CD, as well as "Voices That Care," which was done for our soldiers overseas during the Gulf War, and "What Makes A Family," from the movie, "Stuart Saves His Family." With each song and upon repeated listenings, I've grown to feel that he has always had the kind of a gift that even certain song writers don't have for their own songs - an empathy that turns the lyrics and melody of whatever he is singing into his own. He loves what he sings and fuses with whatever he does in ways that make it sound as if he more than understands what he sings about. It's as if he has written them himself, he is so in sync with what he sings. Such love - and it overflows into virtually everything he commits to - makes it clear that he used his instrument as a virtual conduit to his own sensitive and expansive heart. I can't say that about a lot of vocalists. To me they are few and far between. That Warren was here for even the short time he was is the good fortune and blessing of those of us who are always on the lookout for the kind of music that touches us in ways that release into our own sensitivities and inspires our own creative and listening ears. I could go on and on about each song, I suppose. But how and why his voice moves me so is personal and would probably bore more than it would shed any light on the music. Suffice it to say that Wiebe's voice and his body of deserves to be heard. Thanks to Mr. Dorff, a genuine and talented songwriter, we have Wiebe's unique and special way of making a song his own as a permanent testament to his talent, sensitivity and brilliance.

  • Coulda been Warren Wiebe's album
    author: Sara G

Warren Wiebe was a gifted vocalist who took his own life in October of 1998. The CD says "Somewhere in Time" was the last song Dorff did with him but according to his website it was "True Love at Last". Many people feel he is one of the greatest vocalists of our time which is not really true. He never did a solo album, almost did but David Foster found out about his troubles... I know there are a few demos floating around the internet hopefully Foster and the others who worked with him will give him a CD that will earn him Eva Cassidy-like posthumous success. The opening song "A Little Thing Called Life" is also the theme for the tribute video on his website.

  • It had to be Warren...
    author: Cina

So finally I got the cd. Hands trembling and heart pounding as I put the CD into the player. I have been a fan of Warren Wiebe since David Foster released his River of Love in early 90s. With sadness I found out that he had passed away. I had to get this album much because of Warren. Steve's music and great talent matches Warren perfectly! I listen to it over and over again. Great album, great voice, great pleasure... Thank you Steve for this masterpiece! /Christina, Sweden

  • I close my eyes and he's singing to me
    author: Julie Jones

Wonderful songs and music. I have followed Warren's career since the mid 70's. I still remember him singing to me as I walked down the aisle the day we were married. His voice has always been incredible. It's as though Steve's music and lyrics were written as an autobio for Warren's life. The emotion that Warren has put into the songs is touching. Steve- keep on writing........

  • WOW!
    author: Fred

  • Warren Wiebe Rules !
    author: Laurent

I am not a big fan of that type of ballads when overproduced and overpolished. I think it is very easy to take the soul out of such songs and that's what people like Celine Dion or Mariah Carey do effortless :-( BUT what we have here is genius singer, the late great Warren Wiebe, who pours his heart and soul into every single words he sings. I was not very familiar with Warren's but his singing is so "easy" that it is impressive. The first song, "A Little Thing Called Life", is worth alone buying this album. Steve Dorff's songwriting and piano playing must not be forgotten in our praises. He's the heart of this music and Warren is the soul. The sound is very good and captures every nuances in both Steve's playing and Warren's voice. My one and only critic is that the price is a bit steep (USD 25).

  • author: CD Baby

Featuring the unforgettable, warmly resonant vocal talents of Warren Wiebe, "Original Demos" showcases the perfect, original form of these soft rock songs by hit songwriter, Steve Dorff. Having written numerous songs for the likes of Anne Murray, Kenny Rogers, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, George Strait, Vanessa Williams and many others, the best of his best ring through on this album, perfect for the easy listening audience.

  • These songs are beautifully polished and lovely.
    author: Lisha Z

Music like this is why I come to CD Baby. Commercially annointed music is fine. However, more simple and direct artistic interpretation is just as fascinating if not more so. Don't let the word demos fool you into thinking these songs are somehow unfinished. The tracks here are more polished and professional than some of the recordings that pass for final release by major labels. Warren Wiebe had a pure tenor voice with no vibrato I can hear with my untrained ear and he had a gentle tone, perfect for love songs like these. I think his sound is a cross between the suppleness of Aaron Neville and timbre of Stephen Bishop or Christopher Cross. Steve Dorff's thoughtful arrangements and piano accompaniment are the perfect complement. There is something between the percussion and guitar, Warren's voice and the keyboard, the slowing down and speeding up of the waves of notes in "True Love at Last" that leaves me in a puddle. I just love that song. I don't think I've ever heard a more lovely marriage of lyrics and melody (Billy Kirsch and Steve Dorff) as in "I Never Stopped Loving You." Get this cd right away before each copy is gone - it's a genuine music lovers delight and one of the finest gems of CD Baby.

  • It just can't get any better!
    author: Tommaso

Here's a very special release by one of pop music's finest songwriters ever. It is a collection of intimate pop songs, all co-written and played by Dorff. It includes famous stuff like "I Just Fall In Love Again," a hit for the Carpenters, "A Little Thing Called Life," first sung by Aaron Neville, plus many "waiting to be" hits like "The Wait Was Worth The Angel" and "Everytime You Cross My Mind." The cd is a showcase for these songs as well as for the magnificent voice of the late, great Warren Wiebe who sings all the tunes included here. Wiebe and Dorff recorded these gems a little before Warren's passing. The beauty of the songs, the warmth of his voice and the way all pieces magically fall into place, make this cd an absolute must for quality music lovers. It just can't get any better!
