notes
Twice Grammy-nominated musicians Jody Stecher (vocals, guitar, mandolin) and Kate Brislin (vocals, guitar) make their Appleseed debut with quite possibly their finest recording to date, "Songs of the Carter Family."
The Carter Family of southwest Virginia shed new light on older music. Their recordings (1928-1942) made an immeasurable impact on the course of modern country, folk, bluegrass, gospel, and even rock music. Jody and Kate, widely acknowledged by critics and fans as two of the finest musicians working today, have crafted an album which captures the magic of the Carter Family in a way that is all their own. They have selected songs from the Carter Family repertoire, both well known and obscure, that have touched them the most, including "Meet Me in the Moonlight," "Motherless Children," "Bye and Bye," "Sow 'Em On the Mountain" and "Don't Forget This Song." Jody and Kate have infused these songs with their exceptional trademark sound and vocal magic, allowing the listener to hear these gems of American music in a way that is refreshingly new and comfortably familiar at the same time.
Long-time friend Larry Hanks adds bass vocals to five tracks and Suzy Thompson brings her lovely voice to "Dreaming of You Darling."

Beautiful harmonies, excellent accompaniments.
author: E.K. WallerI love the harmonies that Jody and Kate generate, and Jody's excellent musicianship is nicely highlighted, if in an understated way, on this CD. I'd recommend it highly to fans of Kate and Jody, and to bluegrass, old timey, Carter Family, and folk fans as well.
