Stan's 1970 band "Live" at the Golden Lion in Dayton, Ohio (1st half) in excellent stereo and part one of a 1972 wide-ranging Kenton interview conducted by radio personality Bob Foskett

First, the sound quality is excellent and apart from the occasional soloist a bit off-mike, the recording quality is equal to or better than any "official" live recording of the band. There is an incredible "presence" to these recordings. If you listen through headphones you'll think you're right there in the front row of the club-I'm not kidding - it's that good. Secondly, the band's performance. Just 6 weeks earlier the band had recorded the Redlands album and was still on fire from that date. In fact, by this time the band the band was even more comfortable with the charts (and at the "Golden Lion" they were not under pressure to make a "perfect take", so there is an even looser feel than at Redlands). Just listen to the way the band burns through "Chiapas", "Tico Tico" and "Granada", for example. Von Ohlen is just unreal on all three sets, I have compared the Redlands and "T& T' performances, I would rate the Redlands versions of "Didn't We" and"Hey Jude" better than ''T&T versions" but everything else on ''T&T' is equal and/or better than "Redlands." Of course, while the sets draw a Jot ofthe music from the Redlands date, there were some other charts, as well. Set three, for example, ends with stunning versions of "Tonight" and "Malaguena," Thirdly, Stan's presence. He speaks quite a lot with the audience and the musicians. Stan, the band and the audience were all in good spirits that night and there are a lot of humorous comments flying around. In summary, the Kenton band was really 'up' for this date, playing with fire and commitment. Their respect for Stan is so evident. It's as close to "being there", in my opinion, as any recording will ever get. John Tapscott
