notes
The Stan Bann Big Band was founded by composer / arranger / trombonist Stan Bann in 1990 in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The band quickly made it's mark on the Twin Cities jazz scene with a unique voice focusing on great writing (much of which comes from Stan and other band members), extensive use of woodwinds, and a full ten piece brass section. Over the years Stan and his band have performed over two hundred fifty concerts in the area. O'Gara's in Saint Paul has provided a monthly venue for the group for over twelve years straight. In addition, the band's "Children Are The Melody" benefit concert series uses the drawing power of big band jazz to raise awareness of and funds for charities and programs designed to assist children.
The band's first recording "Good Intentions" brought the band international attention and acclaim from fans and musicians for it's creativity, musicianship, and fresh approach to the big band genre. "Stratford Blue", the band's second release and first on the Northmark Lab label, has already garnered enthusiastic support from artists and enthusiasts around the world.

Fresh and Vibrant Big Band Jazz Sound
author: Edward BlancoThis is an excellent CD. The Stan Bann big band plays the contemporary modern big band sound with intelligent arrangements. No old fashion music found here. The band plays in the style similar to the east and west coast jazz big bands and they are just as good. Stadford Blue is a challenging CD with upbeat musical scores provided by a heck of a brass section. This is truly sophisticated big band jazz music that will be appreciated by the big band jazz fan. I highly recommend it.
Wow, Super Arrangements
author: Galen McQuarrieI was made aware of Stan Bann via the Online Trombone Journal where he moderates. Because I was impressed by his philosophy of music and his ideas, I decided to try one of his CDs. This was one of my better decisions, it seems. On Stratford Blue, Stan has created some of the most vibrant modern and musically pleasing Big Band arrangements that I have heard in a long time. These are not just "new ideas" for new idea's sake but creations based on artistry and a sure sense of musicality. I loved the album, I would recommend it to Big Band fans and music lover's in general without reservation.
