notes
Talking about international challenge? What about this?
4 professional classical musicians from Latvia (all graduated from the Jâz.Vitols Latvian Academy of Music) meeting a french jazz composer and arranger living in Denmark !
Their name? Difference! Which difference you say?
Well be ready to get your body and soul injected with
tons of vitamins.
What you'll hear on this CD are well known jazz standards
seriously getting a second birth.
Not "one more ...".
The treatment here will stimulate your brain and is highly challenging: use of odd meters or unusual rhythmic combinations
and complex harmonies for creating the ideal surrounding
to exciting improvisation.
Add to this a few personal compositions from their french arranger Pierre Tassone and you have the cocktail ready.
Would you try the drink? Well drink my friends ....
And take good care of the Difference!

Four classical musicians from Latvia (!), and a French jazz composer/arranger from Denmark made this beautiful unique CD of well-known jazz standards performed by a classical string quartet. Stimulating and challenging: use of odd meters, unusual rhythmic combinations and complex harmonies create an ideal surrounding for exciting improvisation. PERFECT for when you're feeling a litle bit classical but not in the mood for Mozart.
Take care of the Difference!
A bold and adventurous move
author: Acid Dragon / Phil JacksonIt was a bold and adventurous move on the part of Difference to translate trumpet based jazz to string quartet arrangements and all credit to Tassone for pulling this off!
The big challenge
author: High Fidelity 4/02The big challenge - because it is a very big challenge to let a classical trained string quartet play rhythmic music -is to make it swing as that kind should but without getting futile or indifferent. And that's exactly what succeeds here to perfection .... the recording by Fish Recordings in Riga is, agreed, of a similar high standard.
A new manifestation of Contemporary Classical Music
author: Vitaly Menshikov / ProgressorWith this album, Pierre Tassone and the string quartet Difference have once again proved that there is nothing supernatural in the union of such opposite genres as Classical Music and Jazz. It seems that's true, despite the fact that the essence of the first of them is the composition, whereas the essence of the latter is the improvisation performed on the spur of the moment. In my view, there are no differences between Zero and Infinity and the trips to the Micro World can be as endless and rich in discoveries as the flights to the Macro World. All in all, "Take Care of the Difference" is in many ways a unique album.
A tasteful album performed with style and grace.
author: David Eric ShurThis album combines several genres of music- jazz, chamber music, and pop with a wonderful performance. The original compostions by Pierre are tasteful, and his complex arrangements of some popular songs prove to be interesting as well. The album is immpecibly recorded: the clarity of the string instruments is amazing. The musicians perform the pieces with delicacy and with an amazing "feel" for the arrangements. I look forward to more!
A difference that calls for no indifference
author: Tatsurou Ueda"Take Care of the Difference" is a superb album of quirky jazz performed by a highly skilled string quartet. I hear almost all sorts of styles of music precisely arranged for the group ranging from show tune to 20th century modern composition, all in exquisite complexity and, strangely but naturally good humour. It is quite amaxing how those classical musicians get the jazz right. Unlike other pseudo classical/jazz productions, this album presents four jazz-minded musicians performing enthusiastically with their classical instruments. The fluidity of the rythms, despite the complexity of them, and bluesy tones interwoven in fragile harmonies are few of the things that will instantly captivate the listeners by. The producer Pierre Tassone presents his own compositions that are certainly the highlights of this gem. How can anybody remain indifferent about such a cool _difference_?
When Jazz meets classical, world and contemporary music
author: Luc Marianni / Radio Idfm (english Translation)A record surprising in quality and finesse. A seldom equalled alliance between jazz, classical and contemporary. Innovating and delicate arrangements give all its strength to the album and emphasize with unlimited respect and love the compositions (today become standards) of masters (M. Davis, Gershwin, A.C.Jobim), those being interpreted by a virtuoso quartet in a serene mood at the same time minimalistic, melodic and complex. A spontaneous musical maturity makes this record a unique piece, a model and a reference in that it totally renews the art of arranging and opens the way to new generations of musicians freed of the carcans in which Jazz, Classical and Contemporary locked themselves in. Thank you for this major contribution and puff of oxygen. I already wait unpatiently for the next one ….. Luc Marianni, collaborator and programmer since 1993 of radio program "À la recherche du temps présent" on IDFM (98FM Paris and surroundings). 23-10-2001
A Jazz Classical or a Classical Jazz?
author: Alex SabaI listen to this CD many times but since the first one it takes my breath away. It's rare to listen classical musicians playing jazz with swing. I love all arragements for the standards, but I also have to mention the two brilliants songs writen by Pierre Tassone. Great album. Best of the year.
When Jazz meets classical, world and contemporary music
