Album Notes

Talking about international challenge? What about this? 4 professional classical musicians from Latvia (all graduated from the Jâz.Vitols Latvian Academy of Music) meeting a french jazz composer and arranger living in Denmark ! Their name? Difference! Which difference you say? Well be ready to get your body and soul injected with tons of vitamins. What you'll hear on this CD are well known jazz standards seriously getting a second birth. Not "one more ...". The treatment here will stimulate your brain and is highly challenging: use of odd meters or unusual rhythmic combinations and complex harmonies for creating the ideal surrounding to exciting improvisation. Add to this a few personal compositions from their french arranger Pierre Tassone and you have the cocktail ready. Would you try the drink? Well drink my friends .... And take good care of the Difference!

REVIEWS

author: CD Baby
Four classical musicians from Latvia (!), and a French jazz composer/arranger from Denmark made this beautiful unique CD of well-known jazz standards performed by a classical string quartet. Stimulating and challenging: use of odd meters, unusual rhythmic combinations and complex harmonies create an ideal surrounding for exciting improvisation. PERFECT for when you're feeling a litle bit classical but not in the mood for Mozart.

A new manifestation of Contemporary Classical Music
author: Vitaly Menshikov / Progressor
With this album, Pierre Tassone and the string quartet Difference have once again proved that there is nothing supernatural in the union of such opposite genres as Classical Music and Jazz. It seems that's true, despite the fact that the essence of the first of them is the composition, whereas the essence of the latter is the improvisation performed on the spur of the moment. In my view, there are no differences between Zero and Infinity and the trips to the Micro World can be as endless and rich in discoveries as the flights to the Macro World. All in all, "Take Care of the Difference" is in many ways a unique album.

A Jazz Classical or a Classical Jazz?
author: Alex Saba
I listen to this CD many times but since the first one it takes my breath away. It's rare to listen classical musicians playing jazz with swing. I love all arragements for the standards, but I also have to mention the two brilliants songs writen by Pierre Tassone. Great album. Best of the year.

When Jazz meets classical, world and contemporary music
author: Luc Marianni / Radio Idfm (english Translation)
A record surprising in quality and finesse. A seldom equalled alliance between jazz, classical and contemporary. Innovating and delicate arrangements give all its strength to the album and emphasize with unlimited respect and love the compositions (today become standards) of masters (M. Davis, Gershwin, A.C.Jobim), those being interpreted by a virtuoso quartet in a serene mood at the same time minimalistic, melodic and complex. A spontaneous musical maturity makes this record a unique piece, a model and a reference in that it totally renews the art of arranging and opens the way to new generations of musicians freed of the carcans in which Jazz, Classical and Contemporary locked themselves in. Thank you for this major contribution and puff of oxygen. I already wait unpatiently for the next one ….. Luc Marianni, collaborator and programmer since 1993 of radio program "À la recherche du temps présent" on IDFM (98FM Paris and surroundings). 23-10-2001
