Spot 79 was formed in early-1998 by bassist John McIsaac, keyboardist Adam McIsaac and drummer Merrill James Hale. Guitarist Laird Grainger joined in mid-'98, and the band began a semi-regular Saturday night schedule at popular Portland jazz club Jimmy Mak's.

R.V. Dallman was tapped to replace Hale in April 2000. Dallman had played with John McIsaac in an early-'90s Portland funk band, King Trout, and later, jam-rock group The Rockfords. Dallman also enjoyed a yearlong tenure of performances and recording with Portland singer/songwriter Jeroan Van Aichen in 1994.

Drawing from such influences as the Crusaders, Steps Ahead, Herbie Hancock, early Jeff Lorber, Weather Report and Jeff Beck, Spot 79's music is reminiscent of '70s and early-'80s jazz-rock fusion.

  • Music I totally dug

These guy rock...as much as any jazz-fused guys rock. Really like 'em, and I got a couple of their CDs. Caught them at the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival several years ago and immediately bought this one. Enjoy the live vibe to it, the snarky references, and the music, which is full-ahead, generously enthusiastic stuff. The Theme from S.W.A.T. harkens me back, though a number of friends believe it wrongly to be the Theme from Shaft. Similar, I suppose, but different. I enjoy every song--good stuff for that cocktail party, while chilling over drinks, or sucking back a beer on a hot summer day. (We noticing a theme here?) Big question: where are they now?

It's live baby, the way I like it at Jimmy Maks. You don't know? Deep NW P-town, alphabet city y'll. Get on up, cause like Tub n Tan is like gimme some a that junk ass, know what i'm sayin'? And Mild Cheddar and that crowd sound like someone's gettin' their rubbed down! True that! I think I was there that night man, but I can't hold my smoke, know what I'm sayin'? And Clyde Drexler? Did someone say Phi Slama JAMMA?!! Word.
