notes

"...I have since become enlightened to one of the most creative purveyors of mind music that is around today'.... 'Spectre VII has taken this art form one or two steps further. I loved his last album EQUIPOISE, but this one is in my opinion about twice as good. Full of dreamy soundscapes which take you on a journey through time and space, filling the mind with images and the soul with perspective.'.... ' I highly recommend this CD for fans of electronic music, sci-fi buffs, and progressive music lovers who find it hard to get their fix of that which they love."
Says reviewer Bob Cooper of Portland Online Music Net

"...'Equipoise' could easily turn any techno dance club inside out. On the other hand, lying on the couch with headphones and losing yourself in the hypnotic beats is preferable." Curtis Waterbury's review of Spectre VII's 1999 release, Equipoise, for Portland Citysearch

  • Original electronic music that moves the body and the soul

Spectre VII is the brainchild of Aaron Funk, son of famed composer Eric Funk. Call it trance or electronica or techno, the one given is that it is clearly, in the words of Aaron himself, ‘original electronic music that moves the body and the soul.’ This is the 5th release from Spectre VII since its first Nightmare (that’s the title) in 1996, but if this is how a 26 year old artist expands, I’m eager to hear more. Though even if there’s a wait for the next cd, at 72 minutes and 12 tracks, there’s plenty to enjoy for a while. ‘Train to Beyond’ is one of my favorites, not just because of the pulsating rhythms and quick switch from speaker to speaker, but because there’s an underlying melody that is trying to escape its loose but colorful electronic confines. It’s quite easy to imagine that this is actually an instrumental remix on a hit single, destined for club floor greatness. It’s not, but it would be easy to believe. The whole rocking space fantasy is instrumental, spilling good times and speed onto the onlooker with frightening skill. I don’t know how many trance-agers are involved with the actual performing and production of this cd, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Aaron handles it all himself with fluid chagrin. ’Phase Aire’ lights my cerebral fire, allowing enough busy drones to project themselves through the area like a Tie Fighter late for work, but still gives me a hypnotic pause in the wake of everything shaking. Well, well, well worth trying and buying, because when music gets behind you and Pushes, it’s all downhill on roller skates.

SPECTRE VII Twilight's Dawning - CD It's good to be alive, isn't it? When I first heard the name Spectre VII, I thought, "Great. Another super-sleuth double agent who is a cross between Inspector Gadget and 007 - just what the world needs". I have since become enlightened to one of the most creative purveyors of mind music that is around today. The latest release from electronica whiz Spectre VII is here, and I'm quite pleased with it. Being a long-time fan of electronic music since my days at Aloha High school, where a progressive teacher named Marvin Clark first opened my eyes to the wonders that can be achieved with synths, I have always appreciated what could be done with the tasteful use of Moogs and ARPs. Spectre VII has taken this art form one or two steps further. I loved his last album EQUIPOISE, but this one is in my opinion about twice as good. Full of dreamy soundscapes which take you on a journey through time and space, filling the mind with images and the soul with perspective. Songs like The Fury with it's colorful play with melody, the dreamy Shifting Sands, and the epic One Hit are good examples of how this artists' compositional skills have blossomed. While on the last album the tunes were very good but all linked by a common theme, and at times rhythms as well; Dawnings' tracks are each distinctly different and special in their own way, and each is it's own vivid colour scheme which effects the psyche like a good shock therapy session. I highly recommend this CD for fans of electronic music, sci-fi buffs, and progressive music lovers who find it hard to get their fix of that which they love.
