Indiana native Mike Detmer is the driving force behind the Spectacular Fantastic sound, crafting songs that bear influences ranging from Neil Young to Nirvana. Mike has described his writing and recording process as, "using musical instruments as paintbrushes for my aural canvas."
Recorded and produced by Detmer, Vortex of Vacancy is filled with hooky songs that will stick in your head after one listen. From the pop-tinged opener, Eskimo, to the hip hop flavored Freedom; Vortex of Vacancy will take you on a journey through love, loss, happiness and every emotion in between. The beauty of Detmer's writing skills lies in his amazing ability to allow the listeners to relate to the message that each song holds.
The Spectacular Fantastic's live sound continues to garner attention in the Cincinnati music scene as well. Detmer was recently nominated for Singer/Songwriter of the year by Cincinnati's alternative news weekly, Citybeat. The band, rounded out by Doug Baum (drums), Jon Sheperd (guitar), and Roger Pott (bass) was selected for the top 3 (out of 200 regional bands) in the 2003 97Xposure competition, sponsored by WOXY FM, one of the nation's premier independent radio stations.
