HARD DRIVING- Blues In Britain.
“In Sam Payne we have a chance to prove our daring curiosity. Not that we are given long to contemplate defying convention. (Probably a good thing – hersy is easier when instinctive). Hard Driving maybe short but its not slight. Indeed, it is the brevity that give is sharpness. The release is well named. For description of the ivory tinkling I can think of nothing more accurate than the title. It has a pure yet lilting quality akin to the feeling of riding the crest of a good drink. Payne’s voice, meanwhile, is as smoky as a jazz club at closing time and as full bodied as a Rubens muse. This is a composition of simplicity. There is one performer, her voice and her piano.
