Alt-western indie rock with neil young like vocals, sweet pedal steel, and built to spill guitars.

notes

METRIC was produced and engineered by Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, The Shins.) Tracked at AVAST! Studios during the summer of 2004, Spanish for 100 has produced a follow-up work that digs even deeper into the sonic guitar revelry and truthful song writing territory first explored in their debut album.

Based in Seattle, Spanish for 100 is comprised of Aaron Starkey, Andrew Squire, Ross McGilvray, and Corey Passons, working in the two-guitar, bass, and drum format. The heart of the group is collaboration based off the whispers of heart-born, acoustic songs.

  • Great sound

I bought this CD having never heard the band. It took me a few listens to truly get into the sound but I am listening to the album quite frequently these days. Going to get the other CD now...

WOW, this band is an exceptional group of musicians. I instantly loved their music when I listened to them on Myspace. All it took was four songs and I bought the Metric CD.

  • Great album by a great band

This album puts me in mind of the gentle emotion of Lou Barlows Sebadoh era songwriting ... Great emotions expressed in a fresh and interesting manner. Good stuff - keep up the good work

  • Well-rounded band making their own sound, and making it well.

Harmonic vocals linger through Metric as the band’s mellowish rock enters the mind. All the while Spanish for 100 pushes out indie’s edge even more. They can do that, mainly because Spanish for 100 understands dynamics and, much like Modest Mouse, uses it to their advantage. However, this band is more rock oriented then Modest Mouse. In addition, the band is able to stick out musically, and thankfully is nicely talent-laden and original. For example, could you picture a top 40 band sounding really amazing live? Not with all those studio enhancements, but what is for sure is “See Now”, being the only live song on the album, puts the band to the "live" test, which they easily pass. In fact, the whole album conclusively shows that Spanish for 100 is no overnight flyby. Instead Metric shows a well-rounded band just making their own, and making it well.

Mixing in sonic colors from emo to alt country, indie rock to power pop, this ultimately soaring 6-track listening experience clothes you in thick, sturdy and bountiful harmonies, sits you down in a recliner and hands you a perfectly brewed cup of tasty caffeine. When coarse, bristling guitar lines are matched with perfectly cultivated songwriting and chords so juicy, you want to have them for dinner, you get something like an "opposites attract" relationship where, when put together, the whole picture leaves nothing to be desired. With echoes of big and small influences from Built to Spill to U2 to Modest Mouse, you know that with "Metric" you're going to get 100% of the recommended daily allowance of damn good music.
