(About MP3 downloads at CD Baby)

A brand of Progressive metal with intense, musically rich songs that sketch an emotional story of a future society yet to come.

notes

A Southern California band, Souljourners have caught the attention of music fans seeking something new & exciting. The industry should stand to attention when confronted with this group's own brand of progressive metal.Voted the Best Live Band 2007 at the Inland Empire Music Awards. "A band Destined for Stardom" says Martin Brown, Southern California Awards show producer. Known for intense stage presence and musicianship Souljourners has been tearing California open with their unique blend of virtuoso elements and catchy hooks. The band consists of Michael Couts on guitar and vocals, Scoops (David Brockenborough) on bass, Paul Ellingson on keyboards, Chandler Taylor on drums. Forget the fact that this is a young group of guys and hold them under the same microscope that you would for Dream Theater, Galactic Cowboys or even Voi Vod - Souljourners will most certainly emerge from the test as true blooded rockers with a sharp mind for progressive arrangements. To start with, I may be a bit biased - since I'm a long time prog metal fan, and I've also played with these guys on 3 occasions. That being said - this has to be one of, if not the - best prog metal album I've heard in a long time. Souljourners shreds - but Michael makes it fit. There's no wankery going on here - its musicianship where it fits the song. The writing is phenomenal - here's prog metal with hooks! I'm singing along throughout the album. Bottom line - great album. Add it to your collection and you will not regret it. Also - make sure to see them live. They not only pull off the music on the CD flawlessly - they will wow you with their humble personaable demeanors after the show.

GReat album! there hasn't been a band this good since Queensryche! The band goes from hard rock to metal to insane progressive solos and unisons. Keyboards are untouchable and guitar solos are of those reminiscent to the great Steve Vai! Vocals totally original to this style of music! I recommend this for anyone BUY NOW!!! get this album! best of 2008 for sure!!

I can't remember where I stumbled across this band for the first time (Firestream, net's Music Vault maybe?), but I was hooked upon my first listen. I've always been a fan of their style of rock 'n roll (thanks to Dream Theatre & the Galactic Cowboys) so I couldn't wait for the chance to add their great music to my library. So, what are you waiting for? Place your order today...you WON'T be disappointed!

  • Mind Control

“It’s time to wake up” Thus begins Souljourner’s powerful album, “Mind Control.” I’d decided to purchase their album after perusing the tunes they’d posted to their MySpace music page. At first listen, they struck me a more progressively metallic version of bands such as Trapt, Seether, and Saliva … not too shabby by any stretch. By the third listen, as I was mentally composing this review, I was using such descriptive terms as “near-flawless technique” and “theatrically dramatic composition” but those words began to strike me as hyperbolic and probably useless to anyone trying to decide whether or not to spend their hard-earned cash. (I also didn’t want anyone to accuse me of apple polishing.) Like any great band, Souljourners is both derivative and innovative … the very definition of evolutionary. I’ve only just begun to explore the album’s underlying lyrical content and am beginning to understand its overarching concept, stories of struggle against conformity and control told against a powerfully melodic backdrop. One of my favorite tracks, for instance, is “I’ve Waited.” Understated and menacing from the outset, the song begins with some great percussion work on the toms and smoothly arpeggiated chording outlining a flowing melodic line from the vocals. There is dissonance presented in idiosyncratic yet logical chord changes juxtaposed against some sweet vocal harmonies. The song builds in intensity and includes both a dynamic bass line and some of the coolest single-line guitar/keys work I’ve heard within the context of a vocally-driven song. There is some great playing on the part of each of the musicians in the band but they never got in each other’s way and the instrumental pyrotechnics always served the song. The chorus en español was unexpected (by me) but seamless and effective. The song ends beautifully as it began. No regrets here; this album is a fine addition to my collection and you should seriously consider adding it to your own.
