notes

Jim Smoak started his musical carrer at WROL Radio in Knoxville, Tennessee on the Cas Walker Show. After only two months there, he moved to Nashville and the Grand Ole Opry to work with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys. He also worked with other Nashville artists such as Little Jimmy Dickens and Hylo Brown and the Timberliners. During those early years Jim played at WAFB Radio and Television in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and at WBT Radio and Television in Charlotte, North Carolina with Arthur Smith and the Crackerjacks.
Jim's banjo playing can be heard on records by Bill Monroe, Hylo Brown and Arthur Smith, but now for the first time in 1961 he made two albums under his own name. He began writing his own music and songs when he was a member of the folk group, The Cumberlands.
A list of recordings is as follows:
1. Bayou Bluegrass-Jim Smoak and the Louisiana Honeydrippers (Folk Lyric/1961) (Arhoolie/1972 & 2002)
2. Louisiana Bluegrass-Jim Smoak and the Louisiana Honeydrippers (Prestige International/1961)
3. Bridging The Gap-The Cumberlands (Copper Creek/2003)
4. Carolina Boy-Jim Smoak (Copper Creek/2004)
5. Orange Blossom Special-Jim Smoak (Round O Records/2007)
