notes

Snakes & Ladders is a bizarre yet fascinating interactive construction with 100 tracks (one virtual) on one CD, each track linked to the appropriate square on the well-known Snakes & Ladders board game. The game board represents the individual's psychic growth pattern, either climbing a ladder toward perfect mental balance or sliding down a snake's gullet toward the abyss of base animal instincts. The participants roll their dice, move their mice, and program their CD players to follow and support their halting progress as they slink rat-like through the ever-shifting topography of life's maze toward the smelly cheese of enlightenment.

Slaw's music is scientifically designed to provide listeners with a wholesome personal growth experience, and has been rigorously tested at solo slumber parties and dubious self-help retreats nationwide.

Slaw is Heather Perkins and Tim Walters.

"This might be the strangest demo yet--good strange, that is.... More than just clever presenters, Walters and Perkins are also expert sound manglers. This is truly a must-hear-to-appreciate piece of work." --Keyboard

"I guarantee you've never heard anything like Slaw and never will." --Jim Santo's Demo Universe

  • 100 tracks of yummy goodness
    author: Mike Metlay

This record will mess your head up in a big way, and you'll love the whole process. Children's schoolyard rhymes have a powerful resonance for us even as adults, and Slaw taps into this in a warped cornmeal mush of drastically rethunkthunkTHUNK versions of the soundtrack of our youth. If you're not howling with laughter by the time you reach the end, you should check your pulse. And don't forget to go to Tim's website to download the elusive Track 100...!

  • strange and good
    author: tor

Definitely strange and experimental, but well worth it.

  • all-slaws
    author: brian bulkowski

Turn the lights down low and put on the slaw. I didn't have enough patients to follow the instructions and play the game, but each little slip of sound is provocative, resonant, meaningful. Electronic, rich, deep - it's not got a beat, it's not really got songs, but it hits you right in the plexus and keeps burrowing with its tiny razor sharp teeth.

  • Slaw is a good type of weird
    author: Derwood Bowen

The CD Snakes and Ladders features bizarre splices and weird remixes of old classic favorites, like "Greasy Grimy Gopher Guts" or "Miss Lucy." But, it's mixed together so well that it actually makes a great CD. This CD is weird, but mixed well to be great.
