PERCUSSIVE A CAPPELLA JAZZ -
SLAMMIN ALL-BODY BAND is a fresh mix of a cappella Vocals, Beatboxing and Body Music. Always unplugged and unleashed, this ferociously talented ensemble skillfully reveals how the body can amaze us in the most musical of ways.
SLAMMIN brings down the house with lightening-fast improvisation, electrifying harmonies, blazing percussive dance and raucous humor. Deeply rooted in the grooves of Jazz, Funk, R&B and World Music, SLAMMIN pushes a cappella music outside the box, and over the ledge.
"some of the most exciting, spirit & soul grabbing music I've heard in a long time..inspiring. Your's is the only group of this type that I feel actually works...big time!" -BABTUNDE LEA
"Mixing jazz, reggae and techno with a funky hint of Sly and Family Stone, this body music group abandons not only convention but instruments altogether. Slammin relies exclusively on the musical potential of the human body to cook up a fresh take on old favorites such as Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder and Toots and the Maytals. The Bay Area sensation, known for its signature off-the-wall improv sessions, offers up an organic blend of a cappella, beatboxing and body music (imagine a funk-soul version of Bjork's Medulla)." --Jackie Black, GOOD TIMES
Like all good bands should, the idea for SLAMMIN all-body band came out of a raucous jam session -- at Jazz Camp/West, in the summer of 2002. That musicians could get such a full and textured sound with no instruments outside the body was just too happening to ignore. Once the personnel fell into place, the band found it's mix. Phenomenally talented vocalists pull lightening fast improvisation, playing off the other members of the band, and reacting to the smallest nuances from the audience. The rhythm section lays down the ride, with Body Music throwing in a kinetic component unseen in a cappella music. SLAMMIN concerts were immediately rowdy, funky, humorous, vibrant, and fresh; the material -- old school, contemporary, and of the moment.
We started recording our shows to hear what actually happened when we got in front of people, and the spark was so strong, the material so good, it was challenging to reduce the debut album to one CD. Most of this recording is improvised and live, with cuts ranging from two-track stereo mixes to full studio production. As with every Crosspulse recording, the inter-culturalism and soul imbedded in the Oakland music scene is rampant. We hope you enjoy the performances captured here, and invite you to check out the live show - you never know what might happen, but you know it'll slam.
"Screw that "desert island disc list" construct - who needs a boombox, batteries, and a CD wallet when you've got your body, man? That's the idea SLAMMIN is working with: Keith Terry smacks his body upside itself, Steve Hogan beatboxes, and, over it all and over the top, vocalists Bryan Dyer, Zoe Ellis, Kenny Washington, and Destani Wolf do what can only formally be called a cappella, including a vinyl scratching, hyper-hop take on Outkast's "The Way You Move"." --Stefanie Kalem, EAST BAY EXPRESS
