notes

When SKY SALT play their fairy tale rock, they almost make you believe in fairy tales, too. The quirky NY quartet has enchanted fans and critics alike with their Alice-in-Wonderland-on-Shrooms look and songs that will have you dancing around in your underwear.

Formed and led by the fiery-haired, Russian-born singer Xenia, the band's high-energy live performance has been described as an "outrageous spectacle of neon stripes, dancing and whirling... fused with the infectious energy of a full-contact rock show". A classically trained pianist who happened upon guitar, Xenia brings sparkling keyboard passages and provocative outfits as she frolicks through SKY SALT's effervescent sonic playground. Guitarist Mark A.D.'s gliding, wailing and rumbling fretwork adds surreal textures against the pulsing rhythm section of the androgynous Lillie Charlotte (bass) and whoever's around on drums.

SKY SALT released two offerings, OFF THE GROUND (2002) and I BELIEVE IN FAIRY TALES (2004) (Lime Crime Records/Daedalus Productions) produced by the world-class producer Dennis Patrick. The explosive "Fairy Tales" release bash attracted the sponsorship of Stolichnaya, Annheuser, GMS Drums and the NY Independent Film & Video Festival, with a cadre of press and over 400 fans in attendance.

By touring venues and colleges all across the US, SKY SALT have developed a cult-like following at home and abroad. Their songs can be heard on national and college radio stations throughout US and Europe.

SKY SALT are the masterminds behind MASKARA: The Legendary Festival of Deviants, sponsored by Daisy Rock Guitars, Anheuser-Busch, and New York Waste Magazine. The event showcases the most scintillating local talent from the rock'n'roll fashion arenas and culminates in an electrifying performance by SKY SALT themselves.

The first time I put I Believe In Fairy Tales, I was mesmerized. I was simply stuck with my ear glued to the speaker and hanging on every note. Brilliant. In a time when I was giving up on music, Sky Salt brought me back. New and exciting. No album has made me this happy since Gish.

This album is great...it was on non-stop for weeks after I got it. Sadly its a little on the short side, but the quality of music really makes up for it! My favorite song on there is probably "Beautiful". I love the line "The orange flower that you'll find...bring it to my grave...its beautiful". Everyone should seriously give this band a try...they are really very talented

  • "Lord help me, but it feels like I’m starting to believe in fairy tales too."
    author: Jennifer Layton

This band does it right. Often, when bands take on personas or mysterious histories, the gimmicks overshadow the music. Or the music will be strong while the gimmick falls flat. Sky Salt doesn’t fall into either trap. In fact, the press kit’s fairy tale describing their origins and their Alice-in-Wonderland appearance doesn’t even feel gimmicky. Lord help me, but it feels like I’m starting to believe in fairy tales too. Sky Salt, named after the magic dust that fell from the sky and turned frontwomanchild Xenia from a wind-up doll into flesh and blood (I told you, I’m buying this), is a skilled trio of musicians and writers, crafting lush pop/rock that swirls in gothic vibes and the occasional thrashing guitars. Xenia’s grown up little girl vocal is a nice contrast to the sometimes ominous music she crafts with bandmates Mark A.D. and Dennis Patrick. (Xenia created Mark and Dennis by drawing them on white paper with charcoal and playing music to them until they came to life. She did too!) The only drawback to this contrast is that Xenia’s voice tends to get lost when the guitars get loud. I’d like to hear that mystic voice more in the forefront, especially when we get such intriguing lyrics: Love of my life, I forgot your name in my insanity, What’s the date today? Some things, sometimes, I bring back from dreams ... This band must present a powerful live performance. If you’re in New York, follow the trail of breadcrumbs to see them, and bring some magic beans. Oh yeah, laugh at me now, but we’ll see how unbelieving you are after you come out of that show.
