2002 OUTMUSIC Award Winner: BEST NEW RECORDING-MALE

Skott Freedman is one of the most exciting singer/songwriters to emerge on the contemporary music scene. His work has been both nationally and internationally recognized as people everywhere are becoming more aware of this young musician each year. Freedman's stunning three and a half octave voice varies in its flexibility, ranging from fiery outbursts to barely audible whispers. Rich in tone and pungent with emotion, Freedman uses his voice as a true instrument, varying the expression and intensity with every note. The final product sends the listener on an emotional roller coaster ride.

A native of New Jersey (like another down state "piano man"), Freedman grew up a child piano prodigy, winning statewide competitions by the time he was fifteen. He then began straying off the path of his classical mentors, writing music that was hauntingly beautiful and further developing his taste for dissonance. In many of his songs today, Freedman uniquely sustains a note just a second longer than the listener expects and then suddenly resolves it. In his faster songs, Freedman's fingers fly across the piano, amazing listeners at his speed and accuracy.

Lyrically, Freedman also excels in his undeniable talent to write personal songs that still connect to his listeners. "Freedman's lyrics offer consistent vision into his thoughts and emotions, rather than the occasional glimpses that most songwriters seem to offer," hailed Georgetown University's Hoya after a performance last year. Freedman keeps the listener interested, covering subjects as light as skinny dipping to the intense, darker side of things such as the loss of a loved one. He is a true songwriter with each song unfolding a story that initially invites the listener in, offers some insight into one of many raw emotions, and then gently shuts the door again.

Freedman's debut CD, "Swimming After Dark," independently released through Violent Yodel Records in 1999, has already sold over 2000 copies to date. It received rave reviews from national publications in Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, and more. A four song ep, "Best Little Boy", was also released in the summer of 2000 as a limited in-between projects recording.

Freedman's third recording, "Anything Worth Mentioning", was released in 2001 as a follow up to his critically-acclaimed 1999 debut. "Anything Worth Mentioning" was Freedman's first full-band effort and featured the piano, bass, drums, percussion, banjo, and a special guest singer. It received glowing reviews from Billboard Magazine, Next Magazine, Musicdish, and more. It was also voted the #1 album on the OUTVOICE charts in May of 2001 and one of the top 40 albums of 2001. Freedman's fourth recording, "Some Company" (due out February 2003), features new originals and returns to Freedman's earlier roots of solely voice and piano.

Freedman has appeared in Billboard Magazine, on NBC News, ABC's "Daybreak", been profiled on international LGBT NPR news radio commentary "This Way Out", interviewed and featured in the Southern Voice, Ambush Magazine, the Baltimore Gay Paper / Mid-Atlantic Gay Life, NEXT Magazine, the Washington Blade, the Liberty Press, a featured artist twice on INDIE-MUSIC.com, and has appeared in concert with other artists such as Sophie B. Hawkins, Jill Sobule, Judy Tenuta, Sister Sledge, CeCe Peniston, Ultra Nate, SONiA from Disappear Fear, Peter Mulvey, and Chastity Bono.

  • Music that gets inside you
    author: Doug Tennant

Skott's piano is astonishing and his heartful voice a pleasure. The real beauty in this CD is how each song touches you where you have lived its story. Although clearly gifted, Skott should be recognized for more than a singer/songwriter: the man chronicles life with music. I can't wait to hear more.

  • A solid CD, music that resonates in your heart.
    author: Avi Hellmann

This CD is a welcomed addition to my collection of Skott's other CDs. This is a solid CD, with songs that will speak to your heart.

What a breath of fresh air. Thoroughly enjoyed this disc. Great pianist, wonderful voice, moving lyrics. So good to hear man and solo instrument without orchestration. Keep up the great work. Thank you Skott and cd Baby!

  • excellent CD
    author: Chad from Wisconsin

I first heard Scott's music via CD Baby while in Iraq last year. I was finally able to order it after coming back home this spring. Excellent CD, the best song of which (in my opinion) is Some Company. A great listening experience, and well worth the money.

  • Loved It
    author: Dulce

I got Skott's CD not too long after a breakup & I found Breathing, Tug O' War, Been Waiting For, & Walking Away especially touching. He puts into words feelings that a lot of us have felt but can't express so poignantly.

  • True singer-songwriter
    author: Larry from NJ

An amazing CD. Simple, beautiful lyrics coupled with sweet, uplifting piano. Wonderful. My faves are "tug o' war" and the title track "some company."

  • a must buy for song lovers
    author: Thomas Raniszewski

I recomend Skott's album to anyone who truely appreciates fine songwriting. No crap here! What a shame other independent recordings can not capture the same level of sophisticated writing and production as Skott Freedman's has. If you are someone who does not just jump on every independent band-wagon that comes along and who really wants to get some music worth listening to time and time again, then this is the album for you. Well worth it!

  • Brilliantly conceived, beautifully played
    author: David Messineo, Sensations Magazine

About once every 5-10 years, a singer/piano player releases an album that compels one's attention like a thunderbolt. Carole King's "Tapestry." Billy Joel's "Turnstiles." Add Skott Freedman's album "Some Company" to that distinguished list. From "Some Company" - the remarkable title track - and through the cycle of positive and negative experience that shapes the remaining songs - Skott blends technical excellence in piano playing with a wonderful voice (at times like a smooth merlot). I have not heard Skott's previous releases, but I will check them out based on the strength of this album - the best compliment anyone can give to a musician. As a literary magazine publisher who selects work for publication, I can say the lyrics are uniformly well-penned and often moving. Factor in the musicianship and emotional impact - and "Some Company" gets my highest recommendation. Don't miss this album.

  • Wow....Just wow
    author: Chris Cunningham

I was blown away when I first put the CD in my car. Skott's piano and lyrics went straight to my heart and I could really relate and get into the songs. A huge thank you to Skott for creating this CD and for sharing his life with us.

  • Nothing short of brilliant...
author: Thom Heinrichs - Wellington Bear Music

Skott's songs shine, they wrench truth from the smallest and most important moments of life, and they bring tears to my eyes. At times, one can't help but feel that you are reliving your own life in the images and language he brings to life on top of his music. Good writers are hard to find, as you know. Good writers, like Skott, who are the best interpreters of their own material are even more rare. I can't wait to see where he goes next.

  • A REVELATION!
    author: STEVEN W.

this cd is sheer brilliance. lyrics that are poignant, yet never hackneyed. his fingers fly over the keys that you expect the piano to go up in flames. i find myself singing these songs throughout the day.

  • FILLED WITH EARNESTNESS
    author: The New York Times

Skott Freedman plays piano-man pop filled with earnestness. In a husky voice similar to Marc Cohn's, he croons childhood memories and hopes of true love while the arpeggios ripple.

  • Amazing
    author: Becket3

The CD is amazing! Skott has a lot of talent and his music is beautiful. The lyrics could move even a cold stone heart at times.

  • POWER
    author: Village Voice

    More power to him...

  • Deliciously innovative and emotionally quenching
    author: Kevyn

Skott just keeps getting better and throwing his heart out for his listeners to hear each beat. His lyrics touch each sense and his music draws an emotional background to lead you through his and your life. A couple of well chosen covers round out a completely original album well worth the pickiest listener's ear. I just can't keep this cd out of my player...

  • SUPERNATURAL...
    author: Indie-Music.com

Operatic in its romance and intensity, '"Some Company" has a supernatural quality in its ability to make the listener’s soul rise to greet it.

  • Absolutely beautiful, inside and out
    author: A Friend

Skott has done it again with Some Company. In November and Walking In Memphis have grown better with time, reminding me of Skott's excellent live performances. Tug O' War and Breathing are new favorites that are as gorgeous as the performer.

  • A CD That Makes a Good Friend
    author: Bindy Jr

The collection of song's on "Some Company" are the kind you play in the background when you are writing in your journal or creating in your sketchpad. They range in emotion from that most excellent love song "Anywhere" to dealing with family in "Treehouse." Skott's vocals are like home and the cd overall makes a good addition to the discman wherever you are going.

  • FABULOUS
    author: Russ Capps russindc@yahoo.com

Amazing. He has quite a talent, his voice is his own, not a 'copy' of anyone, and he has a real knack for the piano. Quite gorgeous.

  • EXCEPTIONALLY BEAUTIFUL

Skott's incredible vocal range is displayed over light, flowing melodies...exceptionally beautiful.

  • He makes you want to roll down your windows and sing out loud!!!
author: Richard Ledesma of Blissbitten Music

this young man from behind the piano, sends chills down your spine and through your feet touching the floor that you walk on. He's nothing less than an artist that paints with his fingers on an ivory canvas'.

  • PURE FREEDMAN
    author: Stonewall Society

The meandering melodies and haunting yet warmly familiar phrasing of Freedman's piano add depth and backbone. A natural in all combinations and as with all good art total compliments around.

  • Passionately composed and feverishly sung
    author: Metro Weekly

Freedman’s piano and voice sound like soulmates in duet...nothing less than exceptional.

  • Freedman marks growth with "Some Company"
