STARING INTO SPACES, MIKE SKINNER'S first solo project might surprise anyone familiar with his previous albums.
While his roots in rock and punk music are still evident, this album's varied textures, dynamics and hallucinatory drones are more reminiscent of Philip Glass than The Jam.
Mike's previous band - SIDEDOOR JOHNNIES (Mercury)- was one of the several hundred bands dropped during the Seagrams/Polygram merger last year.
Chris Bracco's extreme musical creativity and innovative recording techniques worked well to capture and drive Mike's impulsive, improvisational style.
All of the drums and other instruments on this recording were performed live by MIKE SKINNER except where otherwise noted in the liner notes.
A remix of tracks 3-6 of STARING INTO SPACES was used by choreographer/dancer Isabel Gotzkowski during her spring recital at the Joyce Soho (NYC) and will be performed in the Toronto fringe festival during July.
Chris and Mike have begun working on Mike's next solo album and have also begun working on the soundtrack for an independent film, "The Finger Lakes".
Additional current projects include albums for Kathleen Schiffman (produced by Walter Schriefels of Quicksand) Dan Skinner and local NYC shows with Elva Snow -featuring Morrissey's former drummer, Spencer, on guitar.
