Born in New York City, from a mother who taught herself how to play the piano, a father who conducted orchestras in his mind, and a culture called Hip Hop sweeping through the heart of the city, SKIM's first language learned was music.

Now based in Los Angeles, she has emerged as a fearless singer/songwriter and poet. In 2006, she established her own production company, Mago Music, which released her first album, For Every Tear. Within days of its release, CD Baby’s executive director featured the album on the front page of the website.

SKIM’s touring continues to grow in performances across the nation—from the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival to Michelle's XXX night club, from college campuses to juvenile halls, from HBO’s Def Poetry Jam to mass demonstrations led by Korean farmers. She has been blessed by overwhelming support in Los Angeles, and has already reached the hearts of many in the Bay area, Chicago, New York City, and Seattle.

Drawing from each of her experiences and environments, she articulates herself through the music she creates, and captivates her audiences with raw honesty and charming humor. She mixes revolutionary visions and fiery rap lyrics with her sultry singing, while strumming a guitar. Her heart pounds as she drums with the passion of her Korean ancestry. Raised in New York City and presented in Los Angeles, she fuses the consciousness of third world peoples with the urban streets of U.S. cities.

SKIM convinces ears to listen, bodies to dance, and hearts to open.

    The album was awesome. I'm not a hip hop fan at all, but I was totally into this entire cd. She has an amazing ability to bring art to life and make a person KNOW her story. I appreciate her artistry.

    Truly a talented artist. I enjoy the whole CD, I love the upbeats when I'm working out and the mellows for relaxing. THe best part of SKIM's music is her lyrics. Espcially in the Korean-American or American-Korean (me) aspect. I like how she incorporates the korean language in a way that relates to most 1.5 or 2nd generations in US... konglish. =)

    I am not a big hip hop fan, but Skim played an amazing cover of Strange Fruit at a local show I went to (Indayog2), and I had to get her CD. Was a little sad it wasn't on here, but- oh my god, the music that is is amazing. It is great to hear some gay korean-american music. 'She Said' instantly became one of my favorite songs. I could not possibly recommend this CD more

    This CD is amazing! I got was introduced to SKIM through an LBGT event in riverside where she laid it all on the line for us; I knew I had to have her tracks and I found myself here. A click of the button later (and it really was as easy as that) she was sent to me in a plastic case to use at my discretion. SKIM gets played every day, all day long. I'm obsessed with her insight, her honesty, her passion and absolute desire. I got the CD about 2 weeks ago and it's the only things I’ve played since (that's saying something!). Keep the passion and Love SKIM!

    This album is pumped full of poignant and beautiful songs that ache with soul and love. I saw most of the songs from this album performed live, and I have to say that Skim puts on one hell of a live show! I wish I lived local to her so I could catch more shows. She has crafted a CD that is absolutely gorgeous and moving at every turn. Get your own copy today before she blows up, because Skim is definitely going to make it HUGE!

    I adore Skim. I was introduced to Skim's sound this summer by some friends who saw her at a small venue in Long Beach CA, and I first saw her at her record release party/concert this summer. I purchased this CD while there, but I had to buy another copy for a friend, who I got hooked on her as well. I've been completely addicted to her lyrics and sound for 6 months, and I don't see it stopping any time soon. Now my only complaint is that she hasn't given us a time frame for her next record release yet! I advise anyone and everyone to listen to Skim. Unfamiliar is my little piece of heaven. Skim is my hero.

    When I 1st heard her voice I was enticed.This soulful beauty can put me in a trace. Skim is so deep, so grounded,seems so strong yet so gentle and full of grace. A perfect combination to fill anyones soul. You can feel her love of being such a artistic,lyrical, genius though her music.Once you listen to her voice you'll understand what I'm talking about. This CD is great and I cant stop listening to it.can't wait to get her next album. Every song I listened to was awesome but loved tracks 13-15..gave me goosebumps she is so sexy!

    Two songs into this brilliantly accessible 22 song debut, we get a window into Skim's motivation: "I'm holding too much in," she vents with beautiful frustration, and as quickly as that, all bets are off. Taking the essential elements of streetwise alternative hip hop and smoothing it out with acoustic folk and core R&B elements, vocally she is capable of throwing lyrical darts like a veteran battle rapper or holding back on the ferocity and whispering supple melodies that are the backbone of the more laid back tracks. Clearly, the driving force here has to be the lyrics, and she is equally versatile in approaching what she says. Embracing scarcely referenced aspects of her Korean background, she shows love for her family, reminds us of her love for the streets, and exemplifies an undying dedication to the arts. Rarely does something that seems like it should be so abstract work so well, but this is definitely an exception.
