notes

One month after the release of Good Friends Good Music," Macon's Skeebo Knight has a new CD that gives a different meaning to the term "jungle fever." Recorded at Paul Hornsby's Muscadine Studios, "Big Monkey Swing" is nine tracks of free-willing jazz duets featuring Marcus Henderson on alto sax and Knight on drums The CD was recorded in one take, no second passes and no rehearsals. As Knight sets the drumbeat groove, Henderson starts blowing. The result is a mind-blowing collaboration of funky beats, tribal rhythm, unpredictable melodies and staggeringly smooth sound. With songs like "Rumble in the Jungle," "Big Cat," and "Head Hunters," the entire CD is an unpredictable jazz paradox - the way it should be. It is as if Knight invited Henderson on stage without even knowing him and finding out they could make music like long lost soul brothers. Many know Knight as a veteran drummer in the Macon music scene. Previous releases include "It's About Time," "Tales from Wimbish Woods," "Jekyll Island Nights," The Way I See It," and the recent "Good Friends Good Music," featuring Henderson, Hornsby, Chuck Leavell, Count M-buto and many other well-named players. The fact that Knight keeps providing us with music is a feat in itself. Suffering from the connective tissue disorder Scleroderma, he must constantly deal with chronic muscle and joint pain, weakness, stiffness and fatigue. But Knight keeps on drumming and plans to release more music until he can do no more. Reviewed by Jessica Walden-Griner of The Eleventh Hour "Macon's Guide to What's Happenin"

  • It swings! It rocks!

Skeebo and Marcus get down to the core on this one! The heart of all music is right here: rhythm and melody. Best example of stripped-down jazz you'll ever get!

  • That Monkey Swings!

Unique concept of drums and horn! And for this swingin' album, that's all you need!

  • Syncopation is their occupation

How many records do you have that include only drums & sax? Not many out there. This concept is clever! It works! I feel like Skeebo & Marcus had a lot of fun doing this. I guess that is why it is so much fun to listen to it. If you like JAZZ, you will like these nine tunes. Get out of the concrete jungle & buy "Big Monkey Swing".

  • This c.d. is one funky monkey!

Seductive jazz fusion....a sax that simmers....cajun style! Drumwork that proves this monkey came out swinging...just don't get in his way. So tribal...I was looking for spears and arrows-

Skeebo does it again! His latest offering captures the essence of what improvisational music is about - spontaneity, expression, freedom etc; all in abundance here. Hats off to Skeebo and saxman Henderson also- monsterous chops, advanced musical ideas, and the interplay between these guys is incredible. Wow! I really dug it. . . Check this one out!
