So much more than just 'girls with guitars'
DECEMBER 2002

Even in the early days of Skarlet O'Hara-back when it was the simple duo of Marnie Pettle and Heather Kirby-these girls knew how to get what they wanted; and they did it well.

Since forming in 1998 under the name Skarlet O'Hara, and after developing a unique style of acoustic rock and funk, a strong following has been steadily building. After playing various open mics for only a few short months, Skarlet O'Hara received local recognition when the Toronto-based company, Friends in the City, selected them as winners of the "Undiscovered - Out Loud" showcase in December, 1998.

What followed next was a sharp rise in popularity and exposure. In 1999 they played Toronto Pride's "One Pride Fits All" Festival, as well as Peterborough Pride's youth stage. Skarlet O'Hara was also part of the "Local Heroes" stage of the 1999 Inside Out Film Festival. In 2000, the band was featured on the soundtrack for the film, What About Me?

In 2001, the two girls of Skarlet O'Hara welcomed the addition of Jenny Casarella on drums and bassist Mary Plasterer, all the way from British Columbia. Now a foursome, Skarlet O'Hara truly began to take shape.

The bigger and better Skarlet O'Hara continued to carve a niche for themselves in Toronto's indie scene, and as they did so, their reputation grew. In August 2001, they were asked to headline the Riot Grrrl Toronto cabaret at the Kathedral, and the fall of 2001 found them playing fundraisers for Ryerson's Rye Pride, RAWA (Revolutionary Women of Afghanistan) and PAN (the Parent Action Network). They also shared the stage with top Toronto acts - Zygote, and God Made Me Funky - in October of 2001.

2002 has been the band's busiest year yet. They kicked things off with an hour-long radio interview on CIUT 89.5 FM. They continued their benefit work with a show at the Revival in support of the TARA (Television and Radio Achievement) Awards, and participated in a fundraiser for the AIDS Bike-a-thon in April of this year.

May 6th, 2002 was the official release party for Skarlet O'Hara's debut full length CD titled, And I Quote. Approximately 200 hundred people were in attendance for the release, which was held at the Horseshoe Tavern. Their CD is currently available online and at various retail stores throughout Toronto.

Skarlet O'Hara has continued their strong involvement with the Toronto Pride festival and 2002 saw them headline the FruitLoopz outdoor stage. The band continued their busy summer of shows with an appearance at London's Pride festival and an opening spot for Sony recording artists 54-40 and Tom Wilson in Fort Erie. In August, they appeared in Quebec for the Rock City Women's Festival, which features an array of female artists including top indie act, Ember Swift. They kicked off September with a top spot at Ladyfest Toronto, the proceeds of which went towards the Interval House - Canada's first centre for abused women and children.

In October of 2002, Skarlet O'Hara became the first band to sign with the independent record label, Flatline Recordings. This deal solidified the already successful partnership Skarlet O'Hara has had with label president Rachel Perriccioli. There are already a number of projects in the works, including a new EP and a prominent spot on a compilation album that would showcase the top female singer-songwriters in the Toronto-area.

On November 21st 2002, Skarlet O'Hara made their first ever U.S appearance at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. They plan to continue to perform in the U.S and to meet some of their American fans who have so insistently requested shows south of the border.

Skarlet O'Hara hopes to build on their growing number of fans (their mailing list boasts numbers of 300) and reach an even larger number of listeners. The band's website (www.skarletohara.com) averages over 6000 hits a month. They have managed to sell approximately 500 copies of their debut CD after only 12 months of release, with orders coming in as far as the United Kingdom.

The four young women of Skarlet O'Hara, all of whom call Toronto home, still maintain an informal and approachable camaraderie in performance. The friendly banter, Marnie's anecdotes, and the personalized nature of their music create a sense of intimacy between the band and their audiences, even at large outdoor concerts such as FruitLoopz. It's not uncommon to see throngs of enthusiasts dancing in front of the stage to such upbeat songs as "$50 Handshake" and "Society Drop Out."

Skarlet O'Hara knows how to put on a great show. They know how to release a great album. They are primed and ready to take their music to new places, and look forward to tackling new endeavours.

Sometimes you come across a CD that just seems to speak to you. This is it for me. If you want a CD that can take you through a spectrum of emotions then snag this one while you can. You can turn this up and sing your heart out while you're driving down the highway, or sit in your room and try and figure out what's going on in your relationships if something isn't feeling right. These girls have an infectious sound and I can't wait to hear more from them. All of the songs are great, but check out #'s 1, 4, and 6 especially...

I picked up a CD and listened to it until my CD player bleed. That's how good it is. If there's one CD to buy, it should, no must be this one. And if you ever get a chance to see them live, GO!!!! They put on a KICK ASS show. I've seen them 3 times and I always leave smiling, singing, and dancing.

Very rarely does one stumble across an artist who is equally as talented writing songs about personal, intimate experiences as they are writing songs that are fun, catchy and full of contagious energy; Skarlet O'Hara manages to achieve both with And I Quote. This is one of those CDs that will stay on "repeat" all day long!

  • A band that says what everyone's thinking.

I loved the CD. You can tell that the lyrics are from the heart and music leaves you jumping up and down and than relaxed a moment later. Not to mention that they are all really, really nice to look at!
