SILVEROOT is a three-person band based in the beautiful wine region of northern California. The band members are Patrick Flynn, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist; Emily Palen, violinist and composer; and Darryl Webb, multi-instrumentalist. AUGUSTA, GA - Listen to the sound of the mountains rolling in the distance. Hear the voices of the American woods singing in the twilight. Its kind of like that when you pop in the inaugural release of Silveroot "Full Measure." For those who’ve spent time in coffee shops in Augusta, it’s Eryn Eubanks and the Family Fold with a full-time violinist and a male vocal.
For those more interested in mainstream works, it’s a combination of Woody Guthrie’s Americana and Alison Krauss’ violin bespeckled bluegrass brimming with smooth hooks and sweet simple lyrics overlaid by a steady rhythmic promise of a brighter sunshine somewhere out in the country where the world is a simpler, kinder place.
I warn the technologically inclined that finding this band on the internet will not be easy without going to the site of their record label, and as a result, let’s have a little introduction.
Silveroot consists of Patrick Flynn’s soft simple vocals and guitars, Emily Palen’s masterful violin playing and sweet voice, and the talented picking of the banjo, accordion and ebow of Darryl Webb. According to the band members, their sound was born out of fun, and with the magic they found in intimate jam sessions, they crafted a pure sound of down-home splendor for their debut record.
Standouts on the album are easy to find, but the heart of the album is in its clarity and craftsmanship throughout the whole. The highlights are found in the gritty honesty of songs like “No Revelation” and “Ain’t the Man," the soft sweetness of beautifully crafted rhythms and metaphors in “Dream Reality," and the smooth resonance of songs like “Full Measure” and “Overland Road." Beauty explodes into contact with deeper meaning in the soulful lyrics of “Passing Glances” as the singer attempts to understand the deeper stories and passages that lie between the moments of repetitive opportunity lost throughout lifetimes spent in motion. Finally, the call of the violin in the closing song of the album is like a hummingbird swimming through the soft summer air requiring the clarity of vision to appreciate the motion of purity in the winds of ages. Built upon this stream of gifted sound the closing track “Stickin with You” feels like the early entry of goodbye in the midst of a wonderful conversation among friends and confidants.
Available at silveradomusic.com and terribly hard to locate anywhere else at the moment, the debut of Silveroot is a beautiful return to the simple pleasures of craftsmanship and sincerity woven around memorable compositions of simplicity expressed in currents of smooth motion reminiscent of waves sliding along the coastal shore.
