notes

This is a benefit CD. All net proceeds from the sale of this CD benefit Artists for Literacy - a nonprofit that connects artists and their work to English teachers who are on the front lines of the fight against illiteracy. We are grateful to CD Baby for facilitating these on-line sales.

The Songs Inspired by Literature Project - SIBL - a project of Artists for Literacy - is made up of artists who care about creating a more literate world. Each of the artists on this CD responded to a call for songs inspired by books, plays or poems. We held a contest - 382 songwriters sent in songs from 35 states and 6 countries. We picked the best 10 songs and matched them with commercial cuts written by world class artists: David Bowie, Tom Waits, Rosanne Cash, Steve Earle and Vicki Randle.

These songs are the bridge between readers and non-readers. They connect us all to great works of literature and engage our ears so that our eyes may be tempted to drink in some words too. We hope you enjoy Chapter Two. Visit http://www.artistsforliteracy.org.

  • nice idea
    author: Nicola Waldbauer

I like the idea of the project, and some of the songs are very catchy. This week we are going to try a little square dance in school listening to Poker Alice... best wishes from Vienna, Austria

  • Perfect for the high school classroom
    author: Liz Shannon

These CD's are a perfect way for me to incorporate something in my classroom that my students don't feel is a "waste of time". As an English teacher I am constantly hearing how we don't do anything in high school that applies to their lives.... well, in my classroom, now we do!!

  • SIBL helps bring inspiration full circle.
    author: Debbie Lynch

First, a story was written. Then it was read, sometimes inspiring the readers to bursts of prose themselves, which of course, led to music and finally to SIBL. Now it is my muse as I teach a diverse classroom the basics of how to enjoy literature. We will practice ekphrasis as well. Thanks for inspiring even more creativity.

  • Very helpful in teaching literature.
    author: Odell Jackson

I purchased both Chapter One and Chapter Two. I found the music to be inspiring as it is directed toward a particular literary piece. On a personal note, I have heard of some of the artists, but many were new to me. I also enjoy listening to new artists and finding that once again music is one of the most powerful teaching tools, not only for the student, but also for the teacher.

  • I was impressed, inspired, felt strong kinship to fellow songwriters.
    author: Bernie Griff

The artistry is quite evident. The melody lines have an original touch. The lyrics are very innovative and,of course, strongly inspired by the prose or poetry they read and experienced to the deeps. This siphoning of the elixer of such phrases as they devoured brought their writings, musings and their melodies they worked with a fine chisel to a deliciously shaped song. I intend to be involved on the next session because of this and I thank you of SIBL for the opportunity. Bernie Griff

  • It's all good!
    author: GiGi

Chapter 2 of SIBL is good music and great lyrics. What a wonderful charity to support, too!

  • Good music for a good cause
    author: Erika

I liked this CD almost as much as volume 1, but some of the songs are a little more country-inspired than I would pick. Still great for a reflective mood, and I will still buy chapter 3.

  • another aesthetically intelligent selection of songs in compilation for a great
    author: Brian Kirven

the literary aspect of this project, and these songs, ties in even deeper the contemplative, intelligent emotion of quality songwriting. Even more diverse than last year's, this well stocked CD has prompted me to look into two of the texts that inspired the songs, so far, who knows how many more...and to utilize the material in a musicaliterary radio program of mine on public radio (KWMR 90.5 fm Point Reyes, CA.) Look forward to next year's

  • Even better than Ch. 1! My new favorite CD!
    author: akatolstoy

I own the first SIBL project benefit CD, and I couldn't wait for this one to come out. Each song is a relevation. I especially love Ana Porter's "Hunger," "Tread Softly," by Eileen Laverty, and "Voice Inside," by Stephanie Riggio. This is a truly wonderful CD, produced to raise money for a wonderful cause!

  • Rocks the socks.
    author: fallon

Loved chapter 1, love chapter 2. Have had it on constant replay since I received it, was actually moved to tears by The Wish at one point. Good music, good cause, what else do you want?

  • My favorite gift-giving CDs
    author: Helen

I absolutely adore Chapter One and now Chapter Two is capturing my heart as well. No where else can you find such diverse music, from Rosanne Cash to David Bowie to Deborah Pardes and Steve Earle. Siddhartha is one of my favorite books of all time, so to see it represented here is a magnificent gift. Thank You SIBL and may this book have MANY chapters!

  • I can't stop listening to Sibl Chapter Two!
    author: Ami

I am a world literature teacher, and I have used several songs from Chapter one in my class as a teaching tool. I can't wait to use the songs from Chapter two in my class, as well. Aside from the songs being wonderful additions in my classroom, every song on the Chapter two album is full of insightful lyrics and beautiful melodies. I have listened to it continuously since I received it!

  • Love the first one? You'll worship Chapter 2.
    author: Lin

SIBL Chapter 2 is certainly the equal of Chapter 1, and I personally like it even more. Many of the song lyrics can stand alone as fine creative writing, well-crafted and often quite intense and/or lovely. There is a good, wide range of music styles, some of which we will all like more than we like others. You will want your friends to hear this CD.

  • super stellar
    author: dri

Chapter two is even better than chapter one. More diverse, intelligent music based on diverse, intelligent literature. Very enjoyable.
