notes
Shira Kammen has spent well over half her life exploring the worlds of early and traditional music. A member for many years of Ensembles
Alcatraz and Project Ars Nova, and Medieval Strings, she has also worked
with Sequentia, Hesperion XX, the Boston Camerata, Teatro Bacchino, the Balkan group Kitka, and is the founder of Class V Music, an ensemble
dedicated to performance on river rafting trips. She has performed and
taught in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Israel, Morocco, and Japan, and on the Colorado and Rogue Rivers. Shira happily collaborated with singer/storyteller John Fleagle for fifteen years, and performs now with several new groups: a medieval ensemble, Fortune's Wheel: a new music group, Ephemeros; an eclectic ethnic band, Panacea; as well as collaborations with performers such as Anne Azema, Patrick Ball, and Margriet Tindemans.
The strangest place Shira has played is in the elephant pit of the Jerusalem Zoo. She hopes to spend more time playing music of all kinds in the wilderness.

Lovely music to celebrate the turning of the year
author: MelusineI ordered The Almanac (one of the last of this lot of CDs, apparently) from the artist, who was quite nice, and it arrived just time to be included on a tape for May Day. I was wearing a Wheel of the Year pendant, the same design for which is featured on the cover, in fact. There are beautiful, ancient songs for each season of the year, with lovely voices and instrumentation that evoke many different moods and paint a glorious picture of past days. A CD that will get much play in my household, year-round!
Fantastic versions of old, Ritual songs and music
author: Jackie NiSidheFans of early music/ritual music can rejoice because here is a recording that has wonderful renditions of many of these hard to find songs. And thankfully, done as they should be without any "new-age" electronics to "tone them down". Get this quick!
Beautiful ancient music, done beautifully
author: Mabel MacMillanI must've been a Druid in a past life, because this music really touches something deep within my soul. The music of the vielle is beautiful and the vocals are soul-stirring as well. Lush harmonies abound. This CD has already been listened to a great deal in our home, and will continue to be played for years to come.
