notes

"Hello, I'm Not Johnny Cash" is the original tribute to Johnny Cash, and endorsed by the Man in Black himself. The disc was recorded live at the South Dakota State Penitentiary on August 9, 1971. From the opening note of "Doin' My Time," this disc rings with true power. Linton's deep resonant voice, talent to write strong songs and impressive instrumental abilities set this project apart from other regional and national releases. Included is a documentary in song and spoken word on the rise of Johnny Cash from the great beginning on Sun Records to the super star and even greater status that he achieved. All this is done with fantastic insight, background and feeling that could only be delivered by an artist like Sherwin Linton. The original release in November 1971 on 33 & 1/3 rpm LP appeared on the best seller lists of many major distributors. Sales surpassed 50,000 by 1972, which was phenomenal for a regional release by an artist on an independent label. The CD release includes three bonus tracks not on the original vinyl version.

Sherwin Linton launched his career in the music business in the mid-1950s as a disc jockey and live performer of Rock-A-Billy music on radio station KWAT in Watertown, South Dakota. Sherwin moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1957 and expanded his territory from the Midwest to playing nightclubs and ballrooms throughout the country. He journeyed to Nashville in 1966, where he cut "Cotton King," a song that catapulted him to the top of the Country charts. Roy Acuff, with whom Sherwin toured, was so impressed with Linton's talents that Sherwin was signed to the legendary Acuff-Rose Publishing Company and Hickory Records, resulting in numerous TV show appearances and coast-to-coast tours. Following the release of "Hello, I'm Not Johnny Cash" in 1971, Linton received multiple national nominations from the CMA and ACM. Subsequent hits included the 1986 novelty song "Santa Got a DWI," an anti-drunk driving song that hit the charts and became a Christmas favorite. Sherwin has released several CDs, including 2003's "It Happened in America," a collection of seventeen original songs written over the span of his nearly 50-year career. Sherwin Linton continues to record and tour tirelessly with his Country & Rock-A-Billy band, thrilling crowds across America.

Sherwin Linton currently lives in the same town as my parents in Minnesota. My father has become a huge fan of his and has gone to several local concerts. I thought he might enjoy this CD and it doesn't disappoint. Sherwin is an excellent singer and musician in his own right and then when he does the Johnny Cash songs you have to really listen because it does sound just like Johnny Cash. A fun and entertaining CD. I'm surprised of the excellent sound quality of a live concert CD. Highly recommended.

As a South Dakota Native I grew up listening to Sherwin Linton and knew he often covered Johnny Cash songs. At one point while listening to this cd, I literally thought I WAS listening to Johnny Cash. But Sherwin also puts his own personal touch on the songs of artists he pays tribute to and that is true here as well. I highly recommend this incredible live performance to all music fans.

We used to listen to this back in the 70's. Caught the Johnny Cash bug after seeing Walk the Line and remembered the "other Johnny Cash" prison album. Sherwin Linton is a great performer and this is a great tribute to Johnny Cash.
