Wistful stories and tales of the road, of childhood suburbia and of dealing with the harder truths. "As The Crow Flies" is the new 6 track release for Sharon Benjamin. It comes as a welcome follow-up to her debut of several years previous which saw chart success as an independent release on the Australian country charts. In a field where rehashes and cliché abound, Sharon appears to go all out to carve new territory in both feel and lyrical outlook. Welcome relief for those who yearn for true country sound but with none of the familiar or well trodden trappings.
More than anything, one thing immediately strikes you about Sharon Benjamin: it's the crafting of fine words and always the promise of spinning a real yarn that sets her apart from so many contemporaries. Into the pot, throw production that provides great depth and warmth letting the songs breathe at times but without ever overblowing or tampering with the essential mood.
As pure song writing goes, the title track taps a vein as rich as the classic Orbison songs of unresolved sorrow. A moving tribute to her father years after his passing, vocalist Sharon provides us with a country requiem where the imagery of the high flying bird beckons us into a theme so universal that to say it is 'touching' or 'moving' does the track no justice whatever. No doubt the 'Big O' would have been honoured to have had this wee gem in his pocketbook of tunes.
