notes

Shannon's book, "Oil for the Chain" is an all-around-music-and-work-book for advancing Irish music players--lots of info and ideas to get your music spinning swiftly and surely. The book features sheet music for common traditional tunes and also original tunes; suggestions on how to approach playing, practicing, and backing (accompanying); and a CD of all the tunes. It's 70 pages of music and more to help players of all instruments take their technique and music to new heights!

Seamus Connolly. Sullivan Artist-in-Residence, Irish Music Chair at Boston College wrote this about "Oil for the Chain":
"Congratulations to Shannon Heaton for producing and publishing this delightful collection of music. Aside from the lovely session-style tunes in the book and on the recorded CD, Shannon has included a selection of her own compositions. (I can't wait to learn them.)

"The information and suggestions throughout the book, for learning, playing and having fun with music are welcome additions and of enormous educational value, not alone to those who are learning Irish music, but also to the more experienced musician. Each tune in the book is named and given a CD track number, making it easy for those who are studying the written sheet music while at the same time, listening to the music on the recording.

"Authored by a musician of exceptional talent, Shannon's book and accompanying recording will no doubt bring much pleasure to the listener and student alike. Should you ever find yourself in a music session or have an opportunity to study with Shannon, I urge you to listen and practice well. This young woman has much to tell and pass along!!!

"It gives me great pleasure to introduce to you Shannon Heaton, Flutist, composer and one of Boston's young generation of fabulous musicians. Listen, Learn and Enjoy!"

this book contains a lot of very nice tunes, but what is more important: a lot of information about playin style, practicing, technical aspects of flute playing, session etiquette, musical developement, all in all a must have, even if backers will miss the chords.

Great music. Standard notation but no cords.

  • Wow! Shannon and Matt are masters of Irish interpretation and style.

This CD is a great rendering of "what it's like" to add phrasing and variations of figures and ornamentation for Irish Flute and tasty accompaniment. Also nice whistle playing on some tunes. Almost like being in flute class with Shannon, like at O'Flaherty's last month. What an awesome way to learn tunes, and make them your own the correct way! By listening to Oil for the Chain and hearing the tunes and adding the little figures that make it sound truly Irish! Thanks Guys!

  • Great material!

Playing in a trad session has always been a mystery to me. OIL FOR THE CHAIN opened a lot of doors and gave me a whole bunch of confidence in how to fit in at that new place down the road. I get to listen to great music, too. A+!
