notes

'A Twist Of Lemon,' the debut album from THE SHAKE UPS, is an eclectic confection of 14 guitar-pop gems, ranging from 60's-style rock to indie folk and a bit of post-punk alternative abandon. This ragtag little band evokes everyone from the Shins and XTC to Weezer and the Apples In Stereo, all the while sounding like themselves.

Drummer Kathie O'Connor lays down a four-on-the-floor beat, while her husband, singer/songwriter/guitarist Patrick, alternately belts out Costello-ish rockers and Brian Wilson-style meditations. Fellow songwriter Curtis Wyant rips a page out of the 60's rock songbook with his melodic bass and keyboard lines, and guitarist Ed Cho fingerpaints all over the proceedings with his wirey Pixies-style leads.

THE SHAKE UPS will shake you up and then sing you off to sleep. Enjoy the ride!

Outstanding music! What the hell took me so long to find this out??!! The CD is like the soundtrack to the wedding and it's beautiful. Can't wait to see you again.

This is our favorite album to come out in 2006. It is fantastic from beginning to end. We play it over and over and it never gets old. God bless the Shake-Ups.

Every once in a while a band comes along that changes the course of human history... An iconic band that defines the time period in which it exists and makes a unique statement in popular music that transcends time and space... So while we're all waiting for that to happen, why not spend some time enjoying the power-pop goodness of this excellent new release, The Shake Ups' "A Twist of Lemon"?! This album has it all - great tunes with variety, great artwork, and of course "the rock." Play it for your friends, your family and your pets. There's something here for everyone. "A Twist of Lemon" is a waste of time well spent, I say. Enjoy, munchkins! -Binky Escargot, Imitation Superhighway

  • "A twist of lemon" proves to be some of his best work.

Back in the 1960's you could go into a record store and most of the time be able to tell if a record was going to rock or not by the cover art. Now day’s bands have flashy cover art with no substance within the sleeve. The Shake Ups bring back the tradition of great cover art with great music in their latest release "A twist of lemon." I have been a fan of the various groups that Patrick O'Conner has performed in and I believe that "A twist of lemon" proves to be some of his best work. This album defines power pop by mixing catchy melodies with great lyrical hooks. Obviously I dig the cover art...I think you get that, but the music speaks for itself. Every song captures your attention with familiar (but not copying) sounds. "You've Got The Number" immediately propels you into the popular rock tones of the guitar driven sound. I also enjoy "Outside Pictures" and Sneaking Suspicion" for their catchy melodies. The other factor that caught my attention on this record was the great production on the songs. The recording quality is great and the composition and overlapping of guitar riffs makes for a symphony of rock and roll pop goodness. I don't know what else to say except that if you enjoy good pop music (beatles, beachboys, kinks, love, sugar, xtc, etc.) then you need this record.

Track #8 is my favorite track and plus i got a sneeky suspicion about The Bush Review. Peace & Chicken grease.

My fellow Americans, It has come to my attention that Indiana rockers The Shake Ups have released their first full-length CD. To that I can only say: "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED." *applause* Now, down in Texas, we have a little something we call Bar-B-Que, heh *smirk* *half-hearted laughter* My daddy can cook the best dern rack of ribs in three counties. When you get a taste of that, mmm, you can only say, "That's some doggone good stuff!" And The Shake Ups "A Twist of Lemon" is also -- "some doggone good stuff!" *standing ovation* Thank you, and God Bless.
