notes
"Wish I Were Here" is a melancholy-but-sweet sampler of pop hooks. Shabby Doll's turf is the classic 3:30 minute pop song with surprising melodic shifts, intimate vocals and a simple arrangement that lets the songwriting come through. Their sound recalls the alternative music of the '80s: jangly, dreamy, or with a post-punk sneer.
In Shabby Doll’s world the line between life and death isn’t always clear. It’s a wistful world of regrets for everything we’ve lost, but with a lingering hope that we’ll get it all back somehow – youth, friendship, love. Call them “gothic” if you like, but they have a poetic indie sensibility all their own.
This is not a slick studio recording, but a collection of simple arrangements, emphasizing the voice. So many indie records have a state-of-the-art sound but generic songwriting. These tunes will stay with you. Guaranteed.
